Pontiff

Pontiff is a Taurin former dancer from the mercenary market who becomes a powerful mount and combat ally during the tenth-floor races.

Biography

The Parade of Horribles

Pontiff first appears among race mercenaries with a reputation for arrogance: Bucket Boy remembers him being returned to the market after striking him during a dance routine. The crawlers nevertheless use his Taurin strength and mobility in later heats, directing him through breaches and around hive shells as part of coordinated rescue and combat operations. He eventually jumps into an off-limits route, producing a notification consistent with an NPC crossing a restricted boundary rather than the abnormal disappearance that took Splash Zone. At the endpoint he is alive beside Britney outside the registered playing field, while the system warns that continued absence will trigger consequences. (Chapters 413–497)

Appearance and personality

Pontiff is a muscular Taurin—an anthropomorphic bull-like man—whose dancer background emphasizes his physique. He stands with arms crossed in his latest scene and is remembered as proud, temperamental, and willing to hit a coworker, though his later cooperation shows he can follow difficult battlefield direction. (Chapters 413 and 497)

Skills, class, and abilities

Pontiff combines Taurin strength with performance-trained movement and serves as a mount or mobile combat platform during the races. He can carry allies, reposition quickly, and operate close to dangerous hive shells. The corpus does not provide a numeric level, named class, or exact stamina limits. Crossing the playing-field boundary remains a system violation despite his physical capability, and his latest survival is conditional on resolving that warning. (Chapters 413–415, 466–480, and 497)

Relationships

  • Britney: Pontiff is standing with Britney outside the playing field at the endpoint, suggesting continued cooperation after his transfer. (Chapter 497)
  • Donut: Donut directs his movement during the hive operation. (Chapters 469–475)
  • Bucket Boy: Their earlier dancer-market relationship is hostile because Pontiff struck him for interfering with a routine. (Chapter 413)
