Lexis

Lexis is Odette's thin, datapad-carrying production assistant, combining backstage coordination with covert field work when Odette orders Beatrice removed from Earth.

Biography

The Collapse and the First Floors

Lexis first manages Carl and Donut backstage on Odette's show, scheduling appearances, guarding the green room, and handling practical details such as Mongo's short-lived bow tie. Her competence lets Odette move between public performance and private conversation without losing control of the production. (Chapters 28–29 and 48)

The Circus and the Iron Tangle

Lexis continues coordinating later interviews, bringing Katia into the program and calling the crawlers to air even when tension with Borant representatives fills the room. She remains professionally neutral in front of guests, preserving the show's operation while Odette pursues a more confrontational agenda. (Chapters 74 and 109)

The Gate of the Feral Gods

On Odette's orders, Lexis infiltrates the New Queen Anne camp to extract Beatrice before Walk-On hunters can deliver her to Borant. She announces a rescue, kills an attacker, lets Brad die under Odette's instruction, incapacitates Beatrice, places her in a capture cube, and stages the scene to support a false bounty narrative. The operation saves Beatrice from boss repurposing while making Lexis an active participant in abduction and cover-up. (Chapter 144)

The Hunting Grounds and the Masquerade

Lexis returns to production duty during the Beatrice disclosure, repeatedly warning Odette about time and moving Carl and Donut between studio and green room. Her ordinary scheduling work sits beside knowledge of how Beatrice actually arrived, but she does not publicly contradict Odette's account. (Chapters 162–164)

The Eighth Floor and Bedlam

Lexis is the only physically present assistant while Odette, Zev, and the crawlers attend by projection. She monitors transfers and timing during emotionally dangerous interviews, remaining a stabilizing backstage presence even when Donut is sent alone into a separate room. (Chapters 256 and 258)

The Parade of Horribles

With After Hours suspended, Lexis accepts a temporary Borant assignment because she is trapped in-system. She quietly gives Carl and Donut surface intelligence, then briefs them on caprid customs before a live roundtable. When the program erupts into panic and gore, she draws but does not fire a concealed gun, warns the crawlers they are still broadcasting, and ends by grimly noting the record ratings. She remains alive, employed, and adaptable at her latest appearance. (Chapters 421–423)

Appearance and personality

Lexis is a thin human woman usually carrying an ever-present datapad. She is composed, observant, dryly amused, and skilled at restoring professional focus, but fear shows when protected information appears on her screen. Her hidden holster and willingness to conduct a lethal extraction reveal operational hardness beneath the assistant role. (Chapters 28–29, 144, 421, and 423)

Skills, class, and abilities

Lexis manages live productions, schedules, transfers, research, and cultural briefings. In the field she uses alien weapons, translation equipment, stealth or access sufficient to reach a survivor camp, a capture cube, and staged evidence. These are equipment- and authority-dependent competencies rather than a crawler class. She can be surprised by system events and does not control Odette's strategic decisions or the live network. (Chapters 28–29, 109, 144, 162–164, 256–258, and 421–423)

Relationships

  • Odette: Lexis is Odette's trusted assistant and operative, carrying out both production work and the morally compromised Beatrice extraction. (Chapters 28–29 and 144–164)
  • Beatrice: Lexis saves Beatrice from Borant's hunters by knocking her unconscious and removing her without consent. (Chapter 144)
  • Carl and Donut: She briefs and manages them across multiple shows, occasionally passing information beyond her formal assignment. (Chapters 28–109, 162–164, 256–258, and 421–423)
