Langley
Langley is a Ukrainian-born immigrant to Finland who leads a group of car salesmen turned archers. His team becomes essential to Carl's fifth-floor air-defense plan, then dies while trying to break up a player-killer group on the sixth floor. (Chapters 114–143, 169–179)
Biography
The Gate of the Feral Gods
Langley emerges as the serious voice among the crawler allies gathered around Carl, urging Louis to pay attention when the situation demands discipline. He leads six archers through grinding, salvage, and the coordinated defense of Hump Town. During the aerial ambush he allocates targets and gives the firing command for hastily built rockets, allowing the group to attack escort planes and balloons before they can withdraw. (Chapters 114–121)
Afterward he protects equipment from the storm, organizes the search for deflated balloons, relocates a stairwell structure, and serves as a communications bridge with Juice Box. By the end of the floor he has reached Level 32, eight levels above the level Carl remembers from their meeting. He considers joining the Popov brothers to hunt player killers, choosing collective protection over the relative safety of remaining unnoticed. (Chapters 124, 134, 142–143)
The Hunting Grounds and the Masquerade
Langley's group follows through by joining a larger effort against Bogdon Ro. Before they can reach their target, Vrah's hunters kill the entire team. Carl later sees Langley's reanimated head attached to Vrah; when he addresses Langley and thanks him, the head bites her exposed neck, creating an opening in the fight. Whether any conscious Langley remains is not established, so the posthumous attack is best treated as corpse animation rather than survival. (Chapters 169, 179)
Appearance and personality
Langley is a human man with a gruff accent that Carl initially misidentifies; he was born in Ukraine and later immigrated to Finland. The corpus gives little additional physical detail. He is serious, organized, and accustomed to working for every advantage. Carl remembers that when his immigrant group finally gains strength, they immediately turn toward helping weaker crawlers. (Chapters 114, 134, 169)
Skills, class, and abilities
Archery and fire-team leadership
Langley leads a six-archer unit, assigns targets, coordinates scatter and rendezvous plans, and times volleys. His strongest demonstrated ranged action uses launcher tubes and a surefire aiming system rather than ordinary arrows: the team locks hastily built rockets onto aircraft and fires in organized salvos. The equipment supplies the explosive effect, while his contribution is tactical distribution and command. (Chapters 116, 120–121)
Field logistics
He protects a downed plane with a tarp, moves heavy structures with his crew, relays messages, and organizes grinding and quests. These practical skills make the group effective beyond combat. His confirmed Level 32 shows advancement, but no race, class, or named innate skill is supplied, and his death ends further progression. (Chapters 114, 124, 134, 142–143, 169)
Relationships
- His archer crew: Langley speaks and plans for the group, whose members share his immigrant background and die alongside him. (Chapters 114–143, 169)
- Carl: Carl trusts Langley with independent fire-team command and later regrets not speaking to him more before his death. (Chapters 116–143, 169–179)
- The Popov brothers: Langley considers joining their hunt for player killers, a decision that reflects his priority of protecting weaker crawlers. (Chapter 143)
Items
No personal item link is assigned to Langley in the current manifest. His team uses bows, launcher tubes, surefire targeting equipment, and a final allotment of rockets, but none is established as a named personal artifact. (Chapters 120–121)
