Holger
Holger is a mullet-wearing were-castor from Signet's original village. He begins as one of her escorts on the sixth floor, becomes a durable tracker and fighter for the crawler alliance, and later helps care for the children carried toward the twelfth floor. (Chapters 160–173, 320–390)
Biography
The Hunting Grounds and the Masquerade
Holger and Clint accompany Carl and Donut under Signet's orders and insist that the crawlers return to safety. Holger supplies history the party otherwise lacks: Imogen's earlier transfiguration devastated their village, Signet later left with Grimaldi, and Miss Nadine saved the survivors from starvation after Scolopendra's attack. His memories carry resentment at repeated disasters and a desire for the survivors to begin “kicking back.” (Chapters 160, 166)
Although he and Clint brawl with each other, both switch instantly into a coordinated defensive stance when danger appears. They track invisible weasels by sound and smell, absorb repeated bites, and do most of the killing without spells. Holger also detects spellcasting and speaks with enough blunt honesty to tell Donut that her singing needs practice, becoming both guard and unvarnished companion. (Chapters 166–173)
Faction Wars at Larracos
On the ninth floor Holger remains with the allied NPC community rather than returning to an isolated village role. He helps supervise the children and is later seen carrying Clint on his shoulders near the group preparing to descend. His survival through the war allows him to preserve the village's history and contribute to the protected community Miss Nadine once built for him. (Chapters 320, 366, 385, 390)
Appearance and personality
Holger is a short, furry humanoid were-castor with a prominent mullet that he calls a sign of dominance. He carries a sickle-shaped sword and a sharpened stick. Proud, argumentative, and fond of crude sayings, he can shift from comic squabbling to alert protection in an instant. His bluntness is not cruelty: he remains loyal to Signet, Miss Nadine, Clint, and the village's children. (Chapters 160, 166–173)
Skills, class, and abilities
Were-castor senses and resilience
Holger can return to a more animal-like castor form and track through underbrush using enhanced hearing and smell. These senses let him fight invisible predators and notice spells being cast. He is immune to the weasels' paralysis and loses little health despite multiple bites, demonstrating substantial durability but not invulnerability. (Chapters 166–173)
Close-quarters coordination
He uses a sickle sword, teeth, speed, and practiced back-to-back movement with Clint. Neither is shown casting an offensive spell; their effectiveness comes from physical traits, tracking, and teamwork. Later scenes emphasize protection and childcare more than further combat growth, and the corpus gives no formal level or class progression for him. (Chapters 166–173, 320–390)
Relationships
- Clint: Holger and Clint fight each other as readily as they fight enemies, but their defensive coordination is immediate and practiced. (Chapters 160–173)
- Signet: He has known Signet since childhood, follows her orders, and preserves the history of her curse and departure with Grimaldi. (Chapters 160–166)
- Miss Nadine: Holger credits her with saving the village after the cataclysm and later serves beside her among the surviving children. (Chapters 160, 320–390)
- Donut: He guards Donut and gives her candid advice, while his colorful phrasing becomes memorable enough for her to repeat. (Chapters 160–173, 346)
Items
No personal item link is assigned to Holger in the current manifest. His sickle sword and sharpened stick are his demonstrated weapons, but neither receives a named artifact history or later custody. (Chapter 160)
