Hekla

Hekla is an Icelandic Amazonian Shieldmaiden who builds Brynhild's Daughters into one of the crawl's most visible teams. Her disciplined leadership conceals a willingness to sacrifice outsiders and manipulate Katia, ending in a failed attempt to seize Donut for her own party. (Chapters 55, 92, 97–98)

Biography

The Circus and the Iron Tangle

Hekla chooses the Amazonian race and Shieldmaiden class, becoming taller, broader, and visibly optimized for strength and dexterity. She recruits a large all-female team and rises near the top of the leaderboard, presenting collective protection as the Daughters' purpose. Behind that image, she excludes inconvenient companions and encourages Katia to suspect Carl and Donut of testing her loyalty. (Chapters 55, 74, 92)

Hekla ultimately tries to have Katia and Carl killed so Donut and Mordecai will be forced into her stronger party. Eva attacks on her behalf, but Katia kills Hekla and gains thirteen levels from the victory. Donut briefly animates the corpse to force back the remaining Daughters, ensuring Hekla's plan ends with the group divided rather than inherited intact. (Chapters 97–98)

The Gate of the Feral Gods

Hekla's death continues shaping crawler trust. Carl compares later uncertainty about Chris to the tension of facing Hekla, and other characters use her name as shorthand for a scheming leader who treats alliances as assets. These are judgments on her legacy, not later actions. (Chapters 123, 129)

The Eighth Floor and Bedlam

The surviving Daughters remain a recognizable group in Iceland and cooperate with other crawlers, showing that Hekla's organization outlives her. Serious new figures are repeatedly compared to Hekla, preserving her reputation for discipline even after the betrayal that killed her. (Chapters 232, 253)

Appearance and personality

Hekla is a blonde Icelandic woman whose Amazonian transformation makes her about a foot taller and substantially more muscular, with a bodybuilder's build. She is controlled, strategic, and outwardly protective, but calculates people as party assets and assumes others use the same manipulative logic. (Chapters 55, 92, 98)

Skills, class, and abilities

The Shieldmaiden class combines Hekla's high strength and dexterity with defensive leadership and mastery of a powerful crossbow. Her Amazonian body supports exceptional physical combat, and her organized party multiplies that strength. The exact skill list is not shown, and her plan fails when Katia turns the close-range confrontation against her. (Chapters 55, 97–98)

Relationships

  • Katia: Hekla tries to isolate and recruit Katia, then treats her as expendable. Katia kills her when the betrayal becomes open. (Chapters 92, 97–98)
  • Eva: Eva is Hekla's friend and principal attacker in the attempted takeover, continuing Hekla's vendetta after her death. (Chapters 92, 97, 142)
  • Donut: Hekla values Donut as an elite asset and plans to acquire her by killing Carl and Katia, fundamentally misreading Donut's loyalty. (Chapters 97–98)

Items

Hekla has no planned inventory-item links. Her crossbow and Vermillion train key are looted after her death; their later custody belongs to other characters. (Chapter 98)
