Hedy

Hedy is the gremlin mechanic chosen to manage Carl and Donut's mechanical garage, keeping their race vehicles operational until she is killed in the eleventh-floor arena.

Biography

The Parade of Horribles

Hedy competes violently with animal-trainer Waldrip Chris for the party's garage position, but wins Donut's choice by explaining that a mechanical vehicle will not eat Mongo. Once selected, she becomes responsible for repairs between heats, manages pit-stop rules, and repeatedly restores damaged vehicles when the team can return them to her garage. Her work makes otherwise terminal crashes survivable, yet the system's “non-combatant” label never grants invulnerability or even safe-room access. Carl tries to preserve her before floor collapse, but Bigs reports that Hedy was lost beside the wrecked ice-cream truck, ending both her life and the repair relationship. (Chapters 395–494)

Appearance and personality

Hedy is a female gremlin in overalls who carries a red toolbox containing implausibly large tools. She is combative, foul-mouthed, practical, and proud of her mechanical expertise, meeting violence with a mallet while still supplying useful technical advice. Her abrasive interview behavior does not prevent sustained loyalty to the selected team. (Chapter 395)

Skills, class, and abilities

Hedy is explicitly a level-30 vehicle mechanic and expert in engines. If a proprietary race vehicle limps back to her garage, she can restore it before the next heat and oversee pit repairs and upgrades. Her expertise applies to mechanical vehicles, not biological mounts, and ordinary repair scrolls cannot replace the garage system. She cannot enter the safe room and can be killed despite her non-combatant tag; her death permanently ends her services. (Chapters 395–400, 405–475, and 494)

Relationships

  • Donut: Donut selects Hedy after the gremlin gives the decisive safety argument about Mongo. (Chapter 395)
  • Carl: Carl relies on her repairs and later orders the garage NPCs protected, but learns she has already died. (Chapters 395–494)
  • Waldrip Chris: The rival applicant fights Hedy throughout their interview and is removed when the party chooses mechanical transport. (Chapter 395)

Items

No generated item article is assigned to Hedy. Her red toolbox and oversized mallet are professional equipment, but the frozen manifest does not treat them as separately tracked artifacts. (Chapter 395)
