Gravy Boat

Gravy Boat, called Ferdinand by Beatrice and later by himself, is the orange neighborhood cat Donut remembers as an unwanted suitor. The crawl converts him into a speaking combatant whose history destabilizes Donut before he becomes a Team Retribution mayor and reluctant ally. (Chapters 67, 144–307)

Biography

The Circus and the Iron Tangle

Donut recounts an idealized romance with “Ferdinand,” but Carl identifies him as Gravy Boat, Marjory's unneutered cat who visited their window whenever Donut was in heat. Beatrice repeatedly called animal control and treated him as a nuisance. The contrast between Donut's princess story and Carl's memory establishes the ordinary animal from whom the later dungeon personality is built. (Chapter 67)

The Gate of the Feral Gods

Odette's operatives locate Gravy Boat while extracting Beatrice, who insists on calling him Ferdinand and projects regret onto him. The cat scratches her and escapes the tent during the violence, avoiding capture by the men searching the camp. His survival gives the production access to another emotionally charged figure from Donut's old life. (Chapter 144)

The Hunting Grounds and the Masquerade

The dungeon presents Gravy Boat as an active combatant, and he kills one of the remaining quest monsters when many experienced crawlers cannot. Donut publicly insists that Ferdinand was her first love while claiming she has moved on, but Carl recognizes the encounter as an engineered rehearsal for using loved ones and familiar animals against crawlers. (Chapters 196–198)

Faction Wars at Larracos

By the ninth floor he speaks as Ferdinand, sits on Drick's head, controls Shanty Town as mayor, and demands the return of his turban and mount. Carl and Juice Box negotiate for his cooperation. A temporary bowler hat appeals to his vanity, and he transfers the town to the Princess Posse in exchange for payment and promised help, materially strengthening the alliance's position. (Chapter 307)

The Parade of Horribles

The eleventh-floor memory scenario shows the original Gravy Boat asleep in Marjory's apartment while her friend urges her to stay away from an abusive partner who had nearly killed the cat. This scene belongs to a constructed past rather than the current speaking Ferdinand, but it reveals that his original home included danger as well as the comic window visits remembered by Carl and Donut. (Chapter 471)

Appearance and personality

Gravy Boat is a large orange male cat. In the crawl he speaks, favors dramatic headwear, rides on other people's heads, and calls himself Ferdinand. He is vain, transactional, sexually notorious, and difficult to control, but capable of killing dangerous mobs and accepting mutually useful bargains. Whether the dungeon personality perfectly continues the original animal's mind is not established. (Chapters 67, 144, 196–198, 307, 471)

Skills, class, and abilities

Feline combat and dungeon enhancement

Gravy Boat survives pursuit as an ordinary cat and later kills an Odious Creeper under dungeon rules. The source does not explain his race conversion, class, level, or attack mechanics, so the kill establishes effectiveness without supporting a specific spell or universal power. (Chapters 144, 196)

Speech, mayorship, and negotiation

As Ferdinand he can speak, participate in team systems, hold a mayoral jewel, and transfer control of Shanty Town through a paid trade. These are dungeon-granted social and office mechanics rather than innate cat abilities. His vanity makes hats unusually effective leverage, while Juice Box's involvement helps secure cooperation. (Chapter 307)

Relationships

  • Donut: Donut remembers him as her first love while also hissing at him through the window. Their dungeon reunion is emotionally manipulated by the show, and she later insists she has moved on. (Chapters 67, 196–198)
  • Marjory Williams: Marjory is Gravy Boat's original owner and protects him from an abusive partner in the memory scenario. (Chapter 471)
  • Beatrice: Beatrice despises the cat before the collapse, then clings to him and renames him Ferdinand during her breakdown. He scratches her and escapes. (Chapter 144)
  • Drick and Juice Box: Drick carries him as Team Retribution's mayor, while Juice Box helps negotiate the transfer of Shanty Town. (Chapter 307)

Items

No personal item link is assigned to Gravy Boat in the current manifest. His mayoral jewel, turban, temporary bowler hat, and requested mount are office markers, borrowed gear, or contested rewards rather than planned inventory items. (Chapter 307)
