Firas

Firas is a young human Hammersmith and Louis's best friend. He grows from a frightened new acquaintance into a confident builder whose weapons and work on the Twister support the coalition, then dies in Eva's attack at the Masquerade. (Chapters 112, 129, 152, 219–220)

Biography

The Gate of the Feral Gods

Firas first appears as a level-22 Hammersmith traveling with Louis. By the time Carl meets him again, he carries himself with visibly greater confidence and helps manage the flying house and fifth-floor hazards. He and Louis deploy depth charges and transport allies, giving the mechanically minded pair a useful niche in the coalition. (Chapters 112, 129, 135, 142)

The Hunting Grounds and the Masquerade

Firas rejoins Katia's group, builds a powerful ballista from a garage-door mechanism, and explains the Twister's altitude limits under the low sixth-floor ceiling. He also supports the plan to descend rather than let other crawlers be trapped. At the Masquerade, Eva's attack kills him despite Britney's last-second rescue effort; the matching tuxedos he asked Katia to make for himself and Louis are never used. (Chapters 151–152, 207, 219–220)

The Eighth Floor and Bedlam

Firas remains present through the grief of those who survive him. Louis's voice and behavior change after losing his best friend, while Donut and Juice Box remember Firas as kind and integral to Louis's hoped-for future. These are posthumous consequences rather than later appearances by Firas. (Chapters 232, 243)

Appearance and personality

Firas is a tall man in his mid-twenties with olive skin, an angular face, and an appearance Carl associates with Middle Eastern ancestry. He is sweet, technically curious, and increasingly self-assured. His friendship with Louis includes playful plans for matching formalwear and serious trust in dangerous engineering work. Skills, class, and abilities

The Hammersmith class supports Firas's construction and weapon work. He can build large mechanisms such as the improvised ballista, maintain or assess the Twister, and help deploy explosives. His creations remain constrained by available parts, ceiling height, and safe operating conditions; no full skill list or level progression after level 22 is shown. (Chapters 112, 135, 152)

Relationships

• Louis: Louis is Firas's best friend and intended partner in the matching-tuxedo surprise. Firas's death leaves Louis visibly hollowed out. (Chapters 112, 220, 232)
• Katia: Katia travels with Firas, supports his construction work, and is secretly making the tuxedos he requests. (Chapters 151–152, 220)
• Britney: Britney saves others during Eva's attack but cannot save Firas, making his death part of the price of her intervention. (Chapter 220)
