Clarabelle
Clarabelle is the long-serving Crocodilian bouncer at the Desperado Club. She controls access between the club's floor-specific entrances, sells security, and repeatedly negotiates the boundary between management's rules and her grudging fondness for Carl and Donut. (Chapters 63–480)
Biography
The Circus and the Iron Tangle
Clarabelle recognizes Mordecai despite his assigned body and admits Carl and Donut after checking their passes. She later sells them private security because of the bounty on them and refuses Donut's charm-based bargaining, establishing herself as a practical gatekeeper rather than a disposable guard. Astrid's later refund exposes a one-hundred-gold discrepancy in what Clarabelle charged, a detail Donut remembers. (Chapters 63, 82, 88)
The Hunting Grounds and the Masquerade
On the sixth floor Clarabelle explains how blood-bar and floor-entry rules affect hunters hiding in the club. When Carl asks for unauthorized access, she refuses to risk her safe job, but Donut uses the old security discrepancy as leverage. Clarabelle compromises by revealing a hidden bathroom stairwell rather than directly changing the door, helping them reach the lower level while preserving a measure of deniability. (Chapter 202)
The Eighth Floor and Bedlam
Clarabelle remains at her post after the club's prior disasters, often waving the familiar crawlers through with minimal argument. She initially resists Samantha's entry and threats, then accepts Carl's explanation and coin while warning him to keep Samantha away from the guards. Her decisions show flexible enforcement bounded by the consequences she expects management to impose. (Chapters 243, 251–252)
Faction Wars at Larracos
After Astrid's death and the club's destruction, Clarabelle survives and keeps her position under Hamed's much stricter management. She enforces the new bans, warns that security has radically increased, and hints that Hamed's bodyguards do not fit ordinary NPC categories. Her priority is survival within the institution rather than resistance to its new owner. (Chapter 307)
The Parade of Horribles
Clarabelle is still guarding the door when Carl's group returns in transformed bodies. Faced with permanently banned patrons and another likely disaster, she raises her hands, jokes about Carl's appearance, and declines to make a serious attempt to stop them. Her latest action preserves the pattern of wary familiarity without establishing that the club's formal bans have been lifted. (Chapter 480)
Appearance and personality
Clarabelle is a female Crocodilian: a lizard-faced, thick-skinned, semi-aquatic humanoid whom Carl finds intimidating at close range. She usually sits in a chair before the inner door and projects weary, grumpy authority. She is shrewd about money, resistant to charm, protective of an unusually safe job, and increasingly amused and exasperated by the destruction that follows Carl's party. (Chapters 63, 82, 202, 307, 480)
Skills, class, and abilities
Door control and club knowledge
Clarabelle checks passes, enforces bans, sells escorts, knows the club's blood-bar rules, and can cause her assigned door to connect to the appropriate floor when authorized. She also knows hidden physical routes. These powers are institutional and location-bound: she cannot grant access to every floor, fears management discipline, and uses the secret stairwell when direct authorization would cost her job. (Chapters 63–82, 202, 307)
Crocodilian traits and charm resistance
The system describes Crocodilians as intelligent, thick-skinned, semi-aquatic beings often employed as muscle. Clarabelle is explicitly a non-combatant NPC and is not shown using those traits in battle. Donut's enhanced charm does not sway her pricing, demonstrating resistance in that interaction without establishing blanket immunity to every mental effect. (Chapters 63, 82, 202)
Relationships
- Carl and Donut: Clarabelle moves from routine bouncer to wary acquaintance, sometimes blocking them and sometimes supplying the loophole they need. Their visits repeatedly endanger her workplace. (Chapters 63–480)
- Astrid: Astrid is her original boss, whose refund exposes Clarabelle's extra charge. Clarabelle survives the catastrophe that kills Astrid. (Chapters 83, 202, 307)
- Hamed: Under Hamed, Clarabelle retains her job but enforces much stricter security and avoids disclosing more than cautious hints. (Chapter 307)
Items
No personal item link is assigned to Clarabelle in the current manifest. Her chair, passes, doors, and escort contracts belong to her employment environment rather than a personal inventory. (Chapters 63, 202)
