Chris
Chris Andrews is a quiet crawler from the Meadow Lark group and the brother of Brandon. A race change turns him into an exceptionally strong Igneous, but much of his apparent early hostility is later revealed to have been caused by Maggie My, an Infiltrator parasite controlling his body. After being freed, he becomes a dependable front-line ally whose bond with Imani helps shape his final decisions in the crawl.
Biography
The Collapse and the First Floors
Chris enters the dungeon beside Brandon and the vulnerable residents of Meadow Lark. Although reserved, he repeatedly accepts the physical work on which the group depends: he trains against the Mind Horrors, helps improvise a wheeled convoy from looted parts, and pulls the residents through hostile corridors with Imani. Those choices make his strength a communal resource rather than merely a means of improving his own survival, and help thirty-six residents reach the second-floor exit. (Chapters 22, 37, and 41)
The Circus and the Iron Tangle
After becoming an Igneous on the third floor, Chris grows more aggressive and argues with Brandon over whether to hunt constantly or remain near the stairwell. He leaves with several crawlers, while Brandon later dies protecting Meadow Lark and leaves a message apologizing and declaring his love. Chris subsequently kills Frank Q and stops answering his former group, behavior initially blamed on his race-altered personality. The fifth floor reveals the fuller truth: Maggie had entered his brain as an Infiltrator and was using his body while he remained conscious but unable to control it. (Chapters 77, 82, 94, and 123)
The Gate of the Feral Gods
Under Maggie's control, Chris conquers the water quadrant and reaches level 35 as an Igneous Zulu Warrior, but briefly regains enough access during petrification to ask his friends to kill him rather than let Maggie continue using him. Carl and Donut instead entomb the shared body while they seek a cure. When Maggie later attacks the Gate plan, Carl uses a phase potion to reach through Chris's lava-rock skull and pull her free. Chris survives, mourns Brandon as soon as control returns, and carries forward the knowledge that his brother died saving others and loved him. (Chapters 118, 123–124, and 143)
The Hunting Grounds and the Masquerade
Once free, Chris rejoins the larger crawler network rather than withdrawing after what was done through his body. He works with Li Jun and Li Na against hostile crawler teams, uses his ability to burrow for surveillance, and helps rescue injured crawlers after the Masquerade. His willingness to drag others to safety restores the protector role he held at Meadow Lark and separates his own quiet conduct from Maggie's violence. (Chapters 180, 204–205, and 219)
The Eighth Floor and Bedlam
On the eighth floor, Chris serves with Li Na's team and expresses regret at having to demolish a beautiful church even though the destruction is necessary to uncover an escape route. He nevertheless helps clear and prepare the structure, then works with the group to keep the space above the route clear when Sheol fire consumes the city. His response is characteristic: he acknowledges the cost without abandoning the work needed to get everyone out. (Chapters 243, 285, and 293)
Faction Wars at Larracos
During Faction Wars, Chris uses his rock camouflage and underground attacks as a scout and ambusher, including hiding beneath the ground and dragging enemies under it. The coalition increasingly recognizes him less for the aggression associated with his race than for what Carl later perceives as his simplicity and quiet kindness. Imani falls in love with him, and both remain with the coalition when the floor ends, carrying that attachment into the next stage of the crawl. (Chapters 313, 320, 368, 372, and 391)
The Parade of Horribles
On the tenth floor, Chris leads a racing team with two crawlers named Erin but refuses an offered exit while Imani remains in the dungeon, persuading both teammates to leave without him. A floor effect converts him from an Igneous into a werewolf that can retain human form, reducing his usual heat. Before entering the Desperado Club's escape route, he and Imani confess their love; she makes him promise to take any real chance at freedom even if he must go alone. He drops through the portal into Sheol, where he is still alive when Louis arrives, though an imminent-change warning causes the others to restrain and stun him before he can shift. (Chapters 395, 409, 473–480, and 497)
Appearance and personality
Chris initially appears as a tall, less-stocky human wearing a metal skullcap. His Igneous form is more than seven feet tall and made of scraping lava rock, with an intensely hot, apparently molten center and eyes like burning coal. The body is physically expressive only in limited ways, which reinforces his already quiet manner. On the tenth floor he is changed into a werewolf but can retain a human form; by Chapter 497, the appearance of his imminent wolf shift is not yet shown. (Chapters 22, 123, 313, 477, and 497)
Chris speaks little and is often mistaken for emotionally simple or detached. His actions instead show patience, kindness, and a strong protective instinct. The aggression observed after his race selection is partly a genuine change noticed before Maggie's takeover, but the most extreme conduct belongs to the parasite controlling him. Once freed, he reliably helps endangered crawlers and remains loyal to Imani even when leaving would improve his own odds. (Chapters 37, 82, 123, 219, 285, 372, and 474–480)
Skills, class, and abilities
Chris's best-documented build is an Igneous Zulu Warrior. The corpus confirms unusual durability, great strength, persistent heat, environmental resilience, earth concealment, and lava production, but it does not provide a complete list of his class skills or formal level history. His werewolf state is imposed by a tenth-floor transformation rather than established as a permanent class evolution. (Chapters 82, 123, 143, 313, 477, and 497)
Igneous body and environmental resilience
The Igneous body is composed of hot lava rock and gives Chris extremely high Constitution. It can survive underwater and in other hostile environments, radiates enough heat to burn or discomfort nearby people, and can excrete lava. The tradeoff described while Maggie controls him is that interface actions such as chat, inventory access, and opening health information cost health; because that explanation comes from the parasite, the exact scope of the limitation after Chris is freed is not demonstrated. Water hinders an Igneous even though it does not prevent breathing, and excreted lava cools too quickly to cut efficiently through solid rock. (Chapters 123–124)
Burrowing, camouflage, and underground attacks
Chris can burrow into sand or earth and blend his rocky body with the ground well enough to disappear from ordinary view. He uses this to shadow dangerous crawler groups, remain concealed beneath allies, avoid area effects, and seize enemies from below. The ability is strong concealment rather than perfect invisibility: specialized tracking, including Juice Box's buzz-ard senses, can locate him, and terrain or effects that make remaining underground unsafe can force him back out. (Chapters 143, 180, and 313)
Strength and close combat
His transformation makes him a powerful melee combatant capable of smashing the water-quadrant boss machinery, pulling heavy loads, and dragging multiple enemies underground. He also retains spells, including lava projection mentioned by Imani, but their names, costs, and full range are not established. By the coalition battles he is used primarily as a durable ambusher and bodyguard rather than as a battlefield commander. (Chapters 37, 118, 123, 180, and 313)
Forced transformations
A tenth-floor attack changes Chris into a werewolf, though he reports being able to remain in human form and his usual heat is reduced. In Sheol, a Change imminent warning signals that he is about to shift, prompting other survivors to restrain and stun him. Whether the werewolf body preserves any of his Igneous abilities beyond residual heat, and how much control he will have in wolf form, remain unknown at the supplied endpoint. (Chapters 477, 480, and 497)
Relationships
- Brandon: Chris's brother and early party member. Their final argument separates them before Brandon's death; Brandon's apology and declaration of love become the first message Chris receives after being freed from Maggie.
- Imani: Imani helps Chris protect Meadow Lark, refuses to abandon him while he is possessed, and later falls in love with his quiet kindness. Chris refuses a deal because she stays and declares his love before entering Sheol.
- Carl: Carl first knows Chris as a fellow protector, then risks infection to pull Maggie from his brain. Chris later fights within Carl's coalition and trusts its final escape plan.
- Maggie My: Maggie inhabits Chris as an Infiltrator, suppressing his control and using his body to kill and hunt. Her removal restores his agency but leaves him with the memory of what she forced him to witness.
- Donut: Donut prevents Carl from killing the possessed Chris, helps preserve him until a rescue is possible, and heals him after Maggie is removed.
Items
No named personal item is consistently established as central to Chris's build in the supplied corpus. His principal advantages come from his changing race and class rather than a signature piece of equipment.
