Chaco

Chaco is a former crawler champion and winged game-show host whose uneasy work for the dungeon places him repeatedly between production demands, divine games, and former associates such as Mordecai.

Biography

The Circus and the Iron Tangle

Chaco first hosts a prize program as a flamboyant former champion, presenting himself as a survivor who has converted crawl fame into employment. His meeting with Mordecai triggers an angry outburst from the manager, implying a painful shared history; the production threat that another incident could remove Mordecai makes Chaco's presence consequential even when Chaco himself continues the show. (Chapters 81–82 and 104)

The Hunting Grounds and the Masquerade

At the Masquerade, Chaco operates an upgrade counter while gods, hunters, and crawlers maneuver around him. The crawlers must reach his station for purchases without provoking the surrounding factions, making his commercial role part of their survival plan. He remains embedded in the event rather than choosing a side in the confrontation. (Chapters 210–215)

The Eighth Floor and Bedlam

Odette reveals that Chaco once killed a contained goddess as part of the betrayal that allowed Mordecai to advance while Uzzi died. That history explains Mordecai's reaction and shows Chaco as an active participant in a morally compromised escape plan, not merely a host. Items bought from him continue assisting the crawlers, while his own account of the past remains limited. (Chapters 221, 258, and 267)

Faction Wars at Larracos

Chaco appears as a field correspondent until Prince Stalwart punches him, after which another Ascendency player substitutes at the council. The incident exposes how little protection his production role offers against royal players, even while he is himself participating in the Ascendency as Nekhebit. (Chapters 344–345)

The Parade of Horribles

The AI abruptly “voluntells” Chaco to serve as Grand Master of the final parade, gives him Lamashtu as a mount, and moves him through the arena despite his confusion. At the endpoint the AI releases Grigori and then blinks Chaco away, leaving the donkey behind. Chaco appears alive, but once again has no control over the job or transfer assigned to him. (Chapters 484, 488, and 496)

Appearance and personality

Chaco is a winged, wolf-headed former skyfowl who wears a brown-and-orange checkered leisure suit and carries a microphone. He is flamboyant and practiced on camera, but becomes nervous and bewildered when production events exceed his script. His visible fussing with a lint roller and confusion under pressure contrast with the darker choices in his history. (Chapters 81, 344–345, and 484–496)

Skills, class, and abilities

As a former crawler champion, Chaco has survived deep enough to gain substantial experience, but the corpus does not provide his old class or statistics. He can host system shows, operate prize and upgrade counters, and once kills a goddess confined by Odette's plan. His Ascendency participation grants temporary control of Nekhebit, while the parade role provides system transport and authority; these are conditional assignments, and the AI can replace or remove him without consent. (Chapters 81–104, 210–267, 344–345, and 484–496)

Relationships

  • Mordecai: Their shared crawl history includes the plan in which Chaco killed a goddess and Uzzi died, leaving Mordecai openly furious with him. (Chapters 81–104 and 258)
  • Odette: Odette recruited Chaco into the old containment betrayal and later recounts his role. (Chapter 258)
  • The dungeon AI: It uses Chaco as host and Grand Master, overriding his preferences and finally removing him from the arena. (Chapters 81, 484, and 496)

Items

No generated item article is assigned to Chaco. His microphone, lint roller, counters, merchandise, and parade mount belong to production roles rather than a frozen personal inventory.
