Areson
Areson the Wise is an elite ogre strongman in Signet's retinue and one of three beings born when the three-headed nodling Di-we died. He protects the forest group from hunters and supplies knowledge inherited from one head of his progenitor. (Chapters 158–199, 311)
Biography
The Hunting Grounds and the Masquerade
Areson first remains behind to defend the trail from invaders emerging from Zockau. When a hunter begins to signal, Areson attempts to subdue him alive but crushes him by accident, apologizing because Signet wanted prisoners. His immense force makes him an effective protector, though his literal speech and poor control complicate delicate objectives. (Chapters 158–159)
He travels with Signet's party during the river fighting and treats Miss Nadine's death as a worthy warrior's end rather than Carl's fault. Areson recognizes evidence of Big Tina's attacks and explains local dinosaur behavior, using inherited and lived knowledge to guide the group. He later rejoins the crawlers near the stairwell and reports on Edgar's preparations for the final assault. (Chapters 169–173, 199)
Signet reveals that Areson, Apollon, and Herman were born when Di-we died protecting her. Each new ogre carries one third of the nodling's knowledge, while Di-we's original corpse became her tattoo. Areson therefore shares an origin and memories with his brothers without being identical to the animated tattoo. (Chapter 173)
Faction Wars at Larracos
Herman's ninth-floor appearance confirms that Areson is still believed to be alive somewhere in the surviving network. The comparison identifies Areson as the bulkier strongman and preserves the unusual family distinction between the three sons and their progenitor's tattoo form; Areson himself does not act on page in this phase. (Chapter 311)
Appearance and personality
Areson is a massive, muscular ogre built like his brothers, especially the circus strongman Apollon. He speaks in short, simplified sentences and is often underestimated as unintelligent, although his title and inherited knowledge justify “the Wise.” He is apologetic when his strength ruins a capture, loyal to Signet, and respectful of courage in death. (Chapters 159, 172–173, 311)
Skills, class, and abilities
Ogre strength and durability
Areson's physical power lets him crush a hunter while attempting only to stop him and remain active through violent battlefield shockwaves. He serves as a frontline protector without a demonstrated weapon or named spell. The same strength lacks precision, and his accidental kill shows that restraint is a meaningful limitation. (Chapters 158–171)
Inherited nodling knowledge
When Di-we dies, the three-headed nodling splits into Areson, Apollon, and Herman. Areson receives roughly one third of the progenitor's knowledge and grows rapidly from the toddler state produced by the split. This inheritance is cognitive and biological, not the same as control of the Di-we tattoo that Signet carries. (Chapter 173)
Relationships
- Signet: Areson protects Signet's retinue and follows her capture orders, while his progenitor died defending her. (Chapters 158–173)
- Apollon and Herman: They are his brothers, each produced from one head of Di-we and sent into a different region. (Chapters 158, 173, 311)
- Miss Nadine: He judges her final stand a warrior's death and affirms that she is worthy after the river battle. (Chapter 172)
Items
No personal item link is assigned to Areson in the current manifest. He is not shown depending on a named weapon or artifact; Di-we's tattoo belongs to Signet and is not Areson's possession. (Chapter 173)
