Zhao Yu

Zhao Yu is a Hidden Dragon Institute envoy, the chief examiner for the Three-Mountains recruitment examination, and one of the Institute's eighteen Golden Girders. A kind man behind a severe appearance, he protects the examination tower from the Immortal Temple and demonstrates the large-scale power expected of a Light Shaking cultivator. Biography

Presiding over the entrance exam

Zhao oversees an examination with more than ten thousand candidates competing for one hundred places. Although his status and strength are intended to discourage noble interference and bribery, his first decision is an act of leniency: he delays the opening slightly so late arrivals still have a chance. This kindness does not alter the exam's dangers or selection standard, but it prevents a minor delay from becoming an automatic failure. (Chapter 116)

From the observation tower, Zhao monitors candidates through the formation screens and takes particular notice when Su Chen, the only top-hundred candidate without a bloodline symbol, reaches the Spirit Burying Terrace. Before he can investigate further, the Immortal Temple launches a coordinated attack that damages the screens and briefly conceals activity inside the examination ground. (Chapters 125–126)

Defending the tower

Zhao neutralizes flaming meteors, poison spikes, and four Yang Opening assassins while protecting the gathered officials. He abandons pursuit when Long Barton's red cloud giant threatens the tower, destroys that manifestation, then supplies an antidote to the wounded and orders a security review. He correctly senses that the attackers prioritized escape and disruption over killing, although the immediate evidence does not reveal the whole operation to him. (Chapter 126)

Later discussion recalls that Zhao single-handedly neutralized the attack while protecting the entire plaza. This is a comparison of Light Shaking scale rather than a new appearance. He remains alive after the examination, but the corpus does not document his later duties, cultivation, or death. (Chapters 137 and 415)

Appearance and personality

Zhao is a middle-aged man with three black whiskers, a square sharply chiseled face, and a naturally dark complexion. His usual solemn expression makes him look immovable, almost sculpted from clay, though surprise can transform that severity into a brilliant and commanding presence. (Chapters 116 and 125)

He is frank, serious, soft-hearted, protective, and suspicious in a professional sense. He gives late candidates another chance, prioritizes bystanders over pursuing defeated assassins, treats poisoned victims, and continues examining the enemy's unusual objective after the immediate danger ends. He dismisses the Immortal Temple publicly to steady the gathering but does not privately underestimate the inconsistency in its attack. (Chapters 116 and 126)

Abilities and cultivation

Zhao is a Light Shaking Realm cultivator, the minimum level associated with the Hidden Dragon Institute's Golden Girders. He can fly, move as an azure streak, and project force across an area large enough to protect the examination plaza. The corpus does not identify his bloodline, Lotus Platform count, cultivation history, or later progression. (Chapters 116, 126, and 415)

His signature manifestation is a jade-colored crystal hand. It freezes hundreds of flaming meteors in midair, reverses them, and uses their wake to scatter most of the Blood Hedgehog Spikes. In close succession, Zhao waves the hand four times to disperse a sword, spear, axe, and palm attack and leave four Yang Opening cultivators bleeding from their orifices. It later destroys Long Barton's red cloud giant with a thundering palm. (Chapter 126)

The defense is powerful but not perfect. Some poison spikes pass through and wound bystanders, the four assassins escape when Zhao turns back to protect the tower, and Long Barton withdraws without being captured. Zhao carries an antidotal medicinal pill that cures the spike poison when dissolved in water and placed on victims' tongues, but this is an external remedy rather than a general healing technique. Relationships

• Su Chen: An exam candidate whose bloodline-free rise catches Zhao's attention. The Immortal Temple's disruption prevents Zhao from observing the crucial interval directly, and no close personal relationship is established. (Chapters 125–137)
