Yuan Lieyang is the other Yang Opening Realm officer at Clear River's Origin Bureau when Su Chen arrives. A fierce Infernal Ape bloodline cultivator who once pursued bureaucratic advancement over further cultivation, he resists Su's authority before fear and practical self-interest turn him into an active subordinate.

Biography

Resistance to the new Knowledge Executor

Yuan Lieyang had wanted the Knowledge Executor post and greets Su's appointment with hostility. He attacks during their first encounter, using a flame-wreathed claw with only part of his strength yet forcing Su back a considerable distance. After the previous leadership falls, Yuan refuses to join Su's faction but accepts the legality of the succession, declaring that he will obey reasonable orders while remaining independent. His composure masks the fear produced by Su's hidden forces. (Chapters 348 and 365–367)

Submission and service

Yuan ignores an order connected to Clear River Dock until Su kills three disobedient officials. He then apologizes, promises exact compliance, and is assigned to execute Long Clear culprits as proof of loyalty. Later he captures Wu Shan for Su, using fire to prevent escape and explicitly worrying that failure would leave him unable to face his superior.
