Tang Hongrui is Su Chen's mother and the principal wife of Su Cheng'an. Her story centers on fear for her blinded son's safety, conflict within a household increasingly controlled by her husband's concubines, and continued attachment to Northface even after Su gains the means to offer her another home. Biography

A mother's fear and divided household

After Su Chen loses his sight, Tang Hongrui fears that despair may drive him to suicide and watches his determination with a mixture of love and alarm. His journeys into Scarlet Mountain and escalating disputes within the clan worsen her health; while he is away, worry leaves her pale and physically diminished. She continues defending his welfare as Su Cheng'an shifts affection and authority toward his concubines, and the household conflict eventually destroys much of her remaining emotional trust in her husband. Tang nearly breaks down when Su prepares to leave for a dangerous border posting, but she cannot keep him from pursuing the independent life he has chosen. By Chapter 347, Su has enough wealth to offer her comfort elsewhere and purchases a summer residence in the Gu District so they can meet. Tang nevertheless refuses to leave Northface permanently, remaining bound by family duty and her own principles even after giving up on Cheng'an as a husband.
