Mair is a celebrated Craftsman puppet master whose home in Sky City becomes a hiding place for Su Chen and Golden Blaze.

Biography

Hostage and reluctant teacher

Su Chen and Golden Blaze disguise themselves as Craftsmen and shelter in Mair’s home while the Harpies search for them. Mair complies because he fears for his wife Lily and their children, but Su Chen treats the family cordially and asks only to discuss puppet construction. Mair’s professional enthusiasm gradually overcomes his reluctance, and the two spend much of the night exchanging technical knowledge. (Chapters 900–901)

The household grows comfortable enough to laugh with its guests during the following days, until Su Chen cuts off Golden Blaze’s arm as part of another plan. The violence reminds Mair and his family that the visitors remain dangerous captors, and their warmth turns back into fear. (Chapters 905–906)

Mair is an older male Craftsman. He is protective of his family, initially agitated and fearful, but also hospitable, principled, and so devoted to his craft that an eager student can draw him into a passionate technical discussion. (Chapters 900–901)
