Lai Wuyi

Lai Wuyi is the patriarch of the Lai Clan's Clear River branch and the noble patron behind the Long Clear Gang. Ambitious but constrained by a relatively weak clan, he repeatedly accepts short-term gains that Su Chen and Wang Wenxin use to erode his control. He is distinct from Li Wuyi, the later emperor whose similar name belongs to another character. (Chapters 374–497)

Biography

Ambition through the Long Clear Gang

Lai Wuyi founded the Clear River branch after leaving the main Lai Clan in Li Province following a failed attempt to seize the patriarch's first wife. In Clear River, his newer and weaker family supports the Long Clear Gang as an instrument of influence. He hopes the murder of Origin Bureau officer Liu Jiyun can help the gang swallow Bureau power and elevate the clan. When Su kills gang leader Li Yue, Lai considers taking direct control but accepts Wang Wenxin as replacement, expecting money and future leverage to restore the old relationship. (Chapters 374–380)

That compromise gradually becomes a trap. Wang destroys the Red Eagle Gang without permission, leaving Lai with a choice between admitting that his subordinate has escaped control and publicly claiming responsibility. The Lai Clan lacks a Light Shaking cultivator, while the expanded Long Clear Gang now possesses several Yang Opening experts and valuable popular support. Lai chooses face, profit, and the appearance of authority. He defends the action before the other clans even though he knows he did not order it. (Chapters 485–486)

Losing control

Under questioning from the other nobles, Lai acknowledges privately that greed and lost control have placed him in Su's design. By Chapter 497, Su explicitly describes Wang and the Long Clear Gang as being sent to take over the Lai Clan, reversing the patron-client relationship. Lai is alive at this latest mention, but the takeover itself and his eventual position under it are not directly shown. (Chapters 490 and 497)

Appearance and personality

Lai is ambitious, calculating, status-conscious, and highly sensitive to public face. His reasoning is not irrational: his clan lacks the raw force to impose its will. Nevertheless, greed and the need to preserve appearances make him cooperate with the process that strips away his authority. (Chapters 374–490)

Abilities and cultivation

The Lai Clan inherits the White Phosphorus Snake bloodline, but the corpus does not state Lai Wuyi's personal cultivation realm, show him activating that bloodline, or give him a named technique. The branch's strongest forces and its lack of a Light Shaking expert are discussed institutionally; these facts do not establish Lai's exact individual level. (Chapters 374–486)

His demonstrated power is political and commercial. He directs a noble clan, treats the Long Clear Gang as a proxy, attends coalition deliberations, and tries to convert criminal influence into control over the Origin Bureau.
