Ji Ruoyu

Ji Ruoyu is the youngest and lowest-ranked member of the Hidden Dragon Institute’s Goldwater Ruins expedition, but his innate Void Sensing makes him essential to the group’s survival. His warnings guide the students through spatial distortions and tell them when the collapsing ruins leave no more time for combat or careful salvage.

Biography

Protected specialist in the Goldwater Ruins

Ji Ruoyu enters the ruins as the expedition’s only sixth-year student and its student number forty, earning the nickname Little Forty. He is weaker than the older participants, yet Su Chen treats his survival as a strategic priority because only Ji can read the void instability that determines how long the sealed realm will remain intact. Ordered to avoid battle and supplied with escape tools, Ji survives an early encounter with two Ferocious Race youths and joins Wang Doushan, whose protection frustrates his desire to contribute more directly. Once reunited with the main group, Ji turns that protected status into practical responsibility: he estimates the ruins’ remaining lifespan, detects a naturally formed spatial maze, identifies its void nodes, and guides the formation specialists along a route that avoids repeated loops. His limited combat strength therefore becomes less important than information no stronger student can replace. (Chapters 291–312 and 318–325)

Patelocke’s deception and the collapsing laboratory

Inside the central laboratory, Ji’s youth and eagerness nearly make him the instrument of a much older intelligence. He reaches for a crystal ball and then accepts the apparent assistant Ilaine Lamburn’s offer of hidden treasure, repeatedly moving to manipulate the control tablet until Su Chen questions the specter’s story. The later revelation that “Ilaine” is Patelocke, seeking release and a healthy body to possess, leaves Ji shaken by how close he came to surrendering his own body. He does not remain passive after that mistake: he warns Su Chen when Danba attacks from behind, helps remove and bind Su Chen’s spear wound during the resulting battle, and continues monitoring the void. When he announces that only the time needed to burn a stick of incense remains, the warning ends further argument and sends the survivors into an emergency salvage before the realm collapses. Later service and a bloodline legacy

After the ruins, Ji continues training at the Institute and is regarded as a grade-A fighter despite remaining relatively weak among the selected elite. He is later expected to assist Su Chen’s Clear River operations after completing other assignments and joins the large reunion of former Institute students in Swallow River. The corpus does not establish whether he enters the Boundless Sect or advances to a named higher realm. Years afterward, blood that Su Chen collected from Institute students becomes the basis of a temporary medicine: Ji is absent, but the extracted void property lets Su Chen sense and manipulate a spatial fluctuation long enough to open a passage. That use confirms the continuing technical value of Ji’s bloodline without proving that Ji himself ever learned the same degree of spatial control. (Chapters 416–422, 630, and 779–780)

Appearance and personality

Ji Ruoyu is introduced as a skinny, elegant youth with large, animated eyes. He is younger than every other student selected for the ruins, and his physical presentation reinforces the contrast between his apparent vulnerability and the strategic value of his bloodline. The corpus gives no later description of his hair, clothing, height, or adult appearance. (Chapters 292 and 296)

He is lively, impatient, proud, curious, and occasionally gullible. Ji dislikes being treated as a burden, teases Wang Doushan for avoiding fights, urges seniors to stop wasting time, and joins their joking with an adolescent enthusiasm that sometimes earns him a playful smack. The same eagerness makes Patelocke’s promise of treasure effective, but Ji learns quickly once the danger is exposed and remains alert enough to warn and assist Su Chen during the next attack. Abilities and cultivation

Ji Ruoyu possesses a void-type Demonic Beast Bloodline whose only individually confirmed innate skill is Void Sensing. His exact cultivation realm, bloodline beast, cultivation method, and later progression are not stated.

Void Sensing

Void Sensing detects spatial fluctuations, disturbances, instability, and nodes. In the Goldwater Ruins, Ji uses it to estimate the time before the pocket realm collapses and to distinguish a naturally formed spatial maze from an immediately lethal trap. By closing his eyes and concentrating, he maps enough nodes to guide the group forward without repeatedly retracing its route. This is sensing rather than omniscience: he cannot instantly solve the maze, predicts that traversal will still take three or four days, and must repeatedly reassess the realm as its condition changes. The ability does not grant Ji teleportation, spatial attacks, or unrestricted control of the void. Later explanation states that even a bearer of an innate void bloodline normally needs to reach Yang Opening before using teleportation, and Ji is specifically known only to sense the void. A medicine made from his stored blood temporarily gives Su Chen spatial affinity, but that effect is short-lived and combines with Su Chen’s microscopic sight and existing knowledge. It demonstrates extractable bloodline potential rather than Ji’s personal mastery of the passage-opening technique. (Chapters 416 and 779–780)

Combat capacity and survival equipment

Ji enters the ruins as its weakest and youngest human participant, so his instructions emphasize survival rather than defeating Ferocious Race elites. Transportation and defensive scrolls, Light Shield Talismans, and other prepared tools let him escape an early encounter until Wang Doushan can protect him. These are expedition provisions rather than innate powers or finalized personal inventory. (Chapters 292 and 296)

After two more years of Institute training, Ji is still weak only relative to exceptional peers and is described as a grade-A fighter capable of overcoming an opponent one tier above him when matched carefully. The corpus does not show the technique used to achieve that result, identify a preferred weapon, or confirm a later cultivation realm. His latest demonstrated specialty remains spatial awareness and support rather than direct combat. (Chapter 422)

Relationships

• Su Chen: Su Chen recognizes that Ji’s apparently narrow talent is vital to the expedition and repeatedly orders others to keep him alive. Ji repays that protection by guiding the group, warning Su Chen of Danba’s ambush, treating his wound, and providing the time estimate that allows an organized escape. (Chapters 291–335)
• Wang Doushan: Wang Doushan protects Ji after they meet in the ruins, avoiding unnecessary Ferocious Race fights because Su Chen has emphasized Ji’s importance. Ji resents the implication that he needs shelter and mocks Wang’s caution, but the partnership keeps the younger student alive until they reunite with the expedition. (Chapter 296)
• Patelocke: Patelocke initially presents himself as a harmless assistant and targets Ji’s eagerness to obtain treasure. Su Chen prevents Ji from freeing the specter, and Ji learns that his body would likely have been seized, making him one of the clearest intended victims of Patelocke’s first deception. • Danba: Danba attacks the laboratory group from concealment after Ji and the others expose Patelocke. Ji’s timely warning prevents the strike from landing unannounced on Su Chen and lets the humans react to the ambush. (Chapters 333–334)
