Goncourt

Goncourt is the ancient Head Ancestor of the Ravagers' central Divine Shrine and the religious representative of the Iron and Blood Country. His command of popular faith makes him an uncrowned counterweight to Emperor Anubi, while his esoteric shrine arts allow him to contend directly with the Scarlet Heart.

Biography

Authority over the campaign

Goncourt rebukes Anubi's recklessness during the Three Mountain Castle campaign, and even the violent emperor lowers his head. He permits Su Chen's bait proposal to be heard, tests its camouflage weakness, and lends the plan the support needed to proceed. When the Beast palace unexpectedly locates the real imperial party, Goncourt helps escort Anubi and remains concerned with recovering the Origin Bone Scepter and Vitality Totem after the retreat begins. (Chapters 714, 717, and 719)

Battle with the Scarlet Heart

Goncourt interposes himself when the Scarlet Heart catches Anubi, first trying to negotiate and then answering the Demonic Emperor with a preserved Tattooed Rau skull and the assembled shrine Ancestors. His chants, summoned guardian, Origin Tools, medicines, and final techniques survive an exchange that kills every supporting Ancestor and leaves him burned black but still standing. A Ravager captain later reports that Goncourt expended so much life force that he was badly injured and probably would not survive much longer. The corpus never supplies a direct death scene or later confirmation. (Chapters 719–720 and 722–723)

Appearance and personality

Goncourt is extremely old, white-haired, and initially shown leaning on a cane. After the battle he is burned black from head to toe and has singed beard whiskers. (Chapters 714 and 722)

He is deliberate, authoritative, perceptive, and committed to institutional principle. Unlike Gucha's blunt opposition, Goncourt can discipline Anubi as an elder correcting a junior. He asks precise questions about Su's plan, attempts negotiation before committing to combat, and remains calm while deploying terrible shrine resources. (Chapters 714, 717, and 719–720)

Abilities and cultivation

Goncourt's physical power has declined with age, but he possesses an unusual method of controlling Origin Energy and can lock onto a fast-moving high-level target. With other Ancestors he forms Sound Prison, turning a primal chant into a physical cage capable of restraining the Scarlet Heart's flames. He also summons the Guardian Soul of Alexander Inferno and uses the Universe Reversing Finger during the prolonged exchange. (Chapters 719–720 and 722)

He carries multiple preserved skull Origin Tools, foremost the skull of the Demonic Emperor Tattooed Rau, whose isolated internal void and elemental properties counter several of the Scarlet Heart's attacks. He repeatedly takes medicines to resist corrosive darkness, but the battle consumes immense life force and leaves him critically injured. (Chapters 719–720 and 723)
