Chalei

Chalei, whose full name is given as Xiu Chalei, is the elderly chief of Happiness Residing Fort in the West River Forest. He negotiates with Su Chen when the forest villages' dependence on the Clear River noble clans becomes intolerable, then pledges his people to Su after the clans answer that challenge with a massacre. The Ravager beacon guard named Chalei in Chapter 653 and the human soldier named Chalei in Chapter 707 are distinct people and are excluded from this account. (Chapters 387–399, 653, and 707)

Biography

Bargaining for a new patron

Chalei initially treats Su Chen as both a trespasser and a possible escape from the villages' commercial captivity. The clans control access to outside markets and pay only a fraction of the value of the villages' medicines and forest goods. After testing whether Su can be made to compensate for a slain tamed beast, Chalei reveals the villages' curse resistance and beast-control knowledge in exchange for trade at five times the clans' price. Even that price remains far below open-market value, but it gives the fort a credible alternative buyer. (Chapters 387–388)

Chalei understands the clans' exploitation but hesitates when Su urges the scattered villages to consolidate for defense. Immediate inconvenience, supply shortages, and pressure from villagers outweigh the danger he has been warned about. The delay proves disastrous when clan forces descend on Happiness Residing Fort and ignore his attempt to surrender. Su's intervention saves the survivors, after which Chalei offers the villages' remaining secrets and accepts Su's protection. Su raises the purchase price again, and Chalei pledges that the villagers will follow him. (Chapters 391–398)

Organizing the forest villages

Once the bargain is made, Chalei explains that medicine derived from Black Kite Grass and Flying Vines allows villagers to resist the forest curse, while Purple Colored Glass supports their inherited method of controlling beasts. He begins contacting the other forts so that Su can become their common backer and buyer. His last direct scene leaves him alive and cooperating with Su; the corpus does not show whether the proposed consolidation is completed or what becomes of him after Chapter 399. (Chapter 399)

Appearance and personality

Chalei is an old man and is treated as the senior spokesman of his fort. The corpus does not provide stable details for his height, clothing, hair, eyes, or build. (Chapters 387–399)

He is shrewd, cautious, and responsible for people whose immediate needs constrain his choices. He bargains hard, withholds valuable information until it can secure better terms, and recognizes the need for an outside ally. His caution can become indecision: he delays Su's defensive proposal until the clans attack. After the cost becomes undeniable, however, he accepts responsibility, changes course, and works to bring the other villages into the new arrangement. (Chapters 387–399)

Abilities and cultivation

The corpus does not state Chalei's cultivation realm, bloodline, weapon, or personal combat techniques. He is not shown defeating an enemy. His demonstrated strengths are negotiation, village leadership, knowledge of local resources, and the ability to coordinate communication among the forest forts. (Chapters 387–399)

Happiness Residing Fort possesses two specialized bodies of knowledge. Its medicinal preparation from Black Kite Grass and Flying Vines suppresses the West River Forest's curse, and Purple Colored Glass is involved in controlling Guardian Angel Beasts. Chalei can explain and trade these secrets, but the text does not show him personally preparing the medicine, establishing the techniques' origin, or defining their exact limits.
