Biography
Examiner, sponsor, and deteriorating researcher
Nick records Saul's opposing elemental affinities during the admission test and later recruits him as an assistant for soul-infusion experiments. His sponsorship sends Saul outside the tower and into the Grind Sail scheme, but Nick also contributes instruments and labor to Byron's trap for Morden. Years of emotion and soul research leave him skeletal, forgetful, and increasingly fragmented. After his death, Saul deciphers a deliberately planted mental cue in Nick's remains, preserving a final piece of information from a researcher whose mind had already begun coming apart. Appearance and personality
Nick begins as a quiet, observant senior who rarely challenges stronger apprentices openly. His later body is wasted almost to a skeleton, mirroring the erosion of his memory; even then, his experimental habits remain precise enough to leave Saul a recoverable clue. (Chapters 5, 75–78, and 303–314)
Abilities
