Death in Caugust

John was an ordinary Caugust resident caught in the city's hidden supernatural deterioration. After death, his wet severed head developed insectlike legs and hovered between vengeful spirit and wraith, making him useful to Saul's research. Saul subdued the transformed soul and retained it for experiments connected with Soul Armament. John's personal life and violent afterlife illustrate how Caugust converted residents into specimens while concealing the scale of its pollution. (Chapters 460–472)

Appearance and personality

John's living appearance is not described in detail. After death, he manifests as a wet severed head carried by grotesque insectlike legs, with instinct and resentment overtaking ordinary behavior.
