Biography
Neutrality punished
Jero appears as a high-ranking apprentice fascinated by death and openly jokes that he only sleeps with the dead. He participates in exchanges and tower research while avoiding full commitment to the rebellion against Gorsa, expecting neutrality to preserve him regardless of the winner. Gorsa treats neutrality as betrayal. He leaves Jero mortally damaged but useful enough to assist with the emergency work around Keli's radioactive contamination. Once that task is complete, the punishment resumes: Jero's soul shatters and vanishes, his body burns to ash, and no diary copy or later vessel continues him. Appearance and personality
Jero is socially detached, macabre, and comfortable enough around corpses to make his preferences part of his public persona. His calculation is not courage but avoidance: he withholds loyalty until Gorsa demonstrates that refusing to choose is itself a choice. (Chapters 158, 237–242, and 425–437)
Abilities
As a Third Rank Apprentice, Jero has strong laboratory competence, soul-related knowledge, and enough technical skill to contribute to radiation treatment under coercion. Those abilities postpone his death but do not reverse Gorsa's sentence. (Chapters 237–242 and 425–437)
