Thearch Darkstill
Thearch Darkstill is the ruler of the Darkstill world, an elite Daofather who commands engineered bugbeasts and submits to the stronger alien outsider Godfiend Witherspike.
Biography
Ruler under a stronger outsider
Darkstill governs one of the Primordial Ruinworlds and belongs to the Four Thearchs, but his title does not make him independent. He once joins the Lord of All Things while still comparatively weak and later falls under Godfiend Witherspike's control when that outsider subjugates the Ruinworld's strongest inhabitants. When Tathagata's forces begin dismantling the Darkstill world's formation bases, Darkstill remains hidden and reports to the master who now outranks him. (Chapters 699–700 and 724)
His report on Ji Ning is evidence-based. Three slain minions transmit the final scene of Ning's attack, allowing Darkstill to reproduce the images and identify a sword immortal with Daofather-level combat power. Witherspike and Saber infer that Ning's true body survived and may have reached fifth-stage swordforce, turning a local incursion into a threat requiring deliberate testing. (Chapter 700)
Testing Ning with formations and bugbeasts
Darkstill first sends an Eight-Armed Warfiend Formation composed of 199 Empyrean Gods. Ning destroys the entire unit so quickly that none of its members can transmit a final scene, leaving Darkstill shocked and depriving him of the intelligence he sought. The loss demonstrates both the scale of forces available to Darkstill and the weakness of remote command when every observer dies before reporting. (Chapter 701)
Ordered to determine Ning's swordforce and, if possible, lure him into the Forest of Dreams, Darkstill next deploys nine bugbeasts. He rides within them through mind and soul, speaks through a stone giant, and calls the creatures his children. The test gains visual evidence of Ning's sword art, but the same connection forces Darkstill to experience the destruction of his creatures and confirms that his assets cannot contain the target. Failed retreat and death
Darkstill later joins the Ruinworld defense while Ning races to reinforce Fuxi and Tathagata. Once Ning reveals half-step Elder God power and kills other True Gods and Daofathers, Darkstill's earlier confidence becomes terror. He flees in a different direction from the survivors, recognizing the same Sword Peacock technique that erased his bugbeasts. (Chapter 713)
Sword Peacock kills six fleeing Daofathers and destroys another Thearch. Darkstill's defensive abilities let him survive the first wave, but only badly injured; Ning then reaches him through the Ninehorn Lightning Serpent and severs his head before relief can become escape. The crude star map recovered from Darkstill later contributes to Ning's first chart of the primordial chaos. (Chapters 713 and 724)
Appearance and personality
The corpus emphasizes Darkstill's hierarchy and reactions more than a fixed physical portrait. He is deferential and careful before Witherspike, proud when speaking through his bugbeasts, and resentful of spending his own forces on another's orders. His intelligence assessments are generally practical, but pride in his “children” and reliance on prepared assets leave him unready for Ning's rapid growth. When those calculations fail, his composure disappears completely. (Chapters 700–703 and 713)
Abilities and cultivation
Elite Daofather cultivation
Darkstill is an elite Daofather and one of the Four Thearchs, placing him above ordinary True Gods and Daofathers of the Ruinworld. He survives the initial sweep of Ning's Sword Peacock through defensive skill after another Thearch disintegrates. That defense is not enough to recover from the damage or withstand Ning's faster follow-up, defining him as formidable within his tier but helpless against half-step Elder God power paired with apex sword arts. Mind-and-soul bugbeast control
He can place his mind and soul within nine bugbeasts, perceive through them, coordinate their attacks, and speak through an individual body. This makes the pack a remote extension of his will and lets him test an enemy without exposing his own body. The connection has operational limits: the beasts remain destructible independent creatures, their loss removes the sensory platform, and even perfect control cannot make their bodies strong enough to survive Ning's sword domain. Formation forces and intelligence projection
Darkstill commands mass formations such as the Eight-Armed Warfiend Formation and can reproduce transmitted death-scenes for analysis. These systems give him scale and intelligence, but both depend on subordinates surviving long enough to send information. Ning's annihilation of all 199 Empyrean Gods before any report arrives is a direct counter to that dependence. (Chapters 700–701)
Defensive survival
His defense can preserve his body through attacks that kill comparable alien Daofathers, as shown when Sword Peacock leaves him alive after erasing six others. It is damage mitigation, not invulnerability: he emerges heavily injured, cannot outrun the Ninehorn Lightning Serpent, and dies to the immediate follow-up. (Chapter 713)
