Patriarch Arcanum

Patriarch Arcanum is a Celestial Immortal of the Youngflame clan whose grief over Youngflame Nong's death drives the clan's feud with Ji Ning. His actions combine personal vengeance, clan resources, assassination, and direct Immortal combat.

Biography

Grief and pursuit

Arcanum's attachment to Youngflame Nong begins with Nong's mother, Immortal Lishui. He loved Lishui like a daughter and blamed himself after her soul was destroyed during the Celestial Tribulation. Supporting her son became his attempt to repair that failure: he supplied Nong with a protective Fiendgod and Greater Teleportation seal and pushed him toward leadership of the clan. When Nong's spirit-tablet shatters, Arcanum experiences the death as a second failure rather than the ordinary loss of a junior on an adventure. (Chapter 282)

He enters the Witchriver Immortal Estate by tearing open its boundary, uses temporal inversion to identify Ning as the killer, then buys intelligence on Ning and Yuchi Snow. Ning's youth and sword talent make Arcanum more determined to kill him, because every year of delay increases the danger to the clan. He visits Black-White College to demand cooperation, but the College refuses to treat a Wanxiang-level conflict as grounds for surrendering its disciple. (Chapters 282–283)

Assassination and escalation

Unable to attack openly in the imperial capital, Arcanum recruits the Loose Immortal Floatcloud as a deathsworn. He provides the mission with tools meant to kill Ning inside a single breath before the city's protections can respond. The attempt fails, sacrificing Floatcloud without ending the feud and confirming that ordinary proxies are no longer sufficient. (Chapters 294–313)

When Ning returns from years of training with stronger companions, Arcanum convenes the clan's Celestial Immortals and argues that his growth cannot be ignored. He also destroys the soultamer jade containing Yu Xia's soul. The act is intended to hurt Mu Northson and provoke Ning, but it transforms the political feud into another intimate loss for Ning's circle and helps bring the retaliation Arcanum fears. Battle at the Youngflame headquarters

Arcanum fights with the other Youngflame Celestial Immortals when Ning attacks their headquarters. He survives a Fiendgod assault through a defensive group formation but suffers severe damage to his Jindan, leaving only a fraction of his ordinary power. The surviving Immortals then form the more balanced Eight Trigrams Roving Dragon Formation to support the clan Ancestor against Ning. (Chapters 446–453)

After karmic sinflames descend on Ning, Arcanum urges immediate suppression rather than waiting for the flames to finish their work. His caution is justified when Ning remains capable of knocking treasures away, but the decisive spatial imprisonment comes from the Ancestor's Worldhold Pagoda, not from Arcanum personally. The campaign kills two Youngflame Celestial Immortals and fails to confirm Ning's death, leaving the clan more vulnerable than before. (Chapters 453–462)

Fear of Ning's growth

A Seamless Gate envoy later shows Arcanum a scryer recording of Ning defeating a much stronger force. Arcanum recognizes that the combined Youngflame Celestial Immortals can no longer safely confront him and immediately carries the warning to the Ancestor. His final role is therefore one of intelligence and alarm: personal vengeance has helped create an enemy who may outgrow every defense the clan possesses. (Chapter 494)

Appearance and personality

Arcanum is a tall, skinny elder with long, narrow eyes and, in one formal appearance, blue robes. His grief for Lishui and Nong is genuine, but it narrows into vindictiveness. He is patient enough to investigate and use proxies, yet willing to destroy an innocent soul to provoke an enemy. Later fear does not erase the obsession; it reveals that he understands the consequences only after Ning's growth makes retaliation dangerous. (Chapters 282–294, 398, and 494)

Abilities and cultivation

Arcanum is a Celestial Immortal. He is the weakest of the eight principal Youngflame Celestial Immortals in the headquarters battle, but remains far stronger than even exceptionally old Loose Immortals.

Starlight hands and spatial breach

Arcanum manifests innumerable points of dreamlike starlight and condenses them into two giant hands. By pulling with both hands, he tears open a corridor into the separate dimension containing the Witchriver Estate. The feat demonstrates large-scale spatial force, although it requires locating the estate's connection point and does not establish unrestricted travel into any sealed world. (Chapter 282)

Temporal inversion and investigation

Inside Witchriver, he reverses the local flow of time as an observational technique to reconstruct Nong's death and identify Ning. Temporal inversion reveals past events at the location rather than changing their outcome. He combines it with purchased intelligence and clan networks, making investigation—not divination alone—the foundation of the assassination campaign. (Chapters 282–283)

Group formations

The Eight Immortals Sea-Subduing Formation focuses entirely on defense and lets eight Celestial Immortals withstand a much larger Fiendgod force for a limited time. The Eight Trigrams Roving Dragon Formation distributes power between attack and defense and is chosen when the wounded group supports the Ancestor against one target. Both depend on multiple compatible Immortals; neither represents Arcanum's unaided strength. (Chapters 446–453)

Heavy injuries sharply reduce his output. After the Fiendgod battle, Arcanum can use only roughly ten to twenty percent of his normal power, showing that Celestial-Immortal energy and the golden-pellet Jindan require time and medicines to recover after severe damage. (Chapter 453)

• Youngflame Nong: The grandson-like figure Arcanum raises after Lishui's death. Nong's loss turns old guilt into the central motive for pursuing Ning. (Chapter 282)
