Old Man Yuan — Desolate Era

Old Man Yuan is the identity used by the Outsider Mindlord after he possesses an ancient Three Realms cultivator. He presents himself as an independent Daofather and heartforce scholar, mentors Ji Ning, and secretly builds an army of soulslaves before attempting to seize the Three Realms.

Biography

Gardener and would-be teacher

Disguised as an old gardener on Brightheart Island, Yuan observes Ning's training and intervenes against assassins. He reveals himself as one of the Four Ancestors of the River Source, offers to become Ning's second master, and argues with Subhuti when Ning refuses to decide without permission. Although the apprenticeship fails, Yuan gives Ning the [Heart Sutra], a broad collection of methods for applying heartforce to the body, soul, weapons, and movement. (Chapters 500–504)

Neutrality as concealment

Yuan publicly refuses both the Nuwa Alliance and Seamless Gate, claiming that rulership of the Three Realms is not worth destroying old friendships. In truth, an injured Outsider possessed the original Yuan during the Primordial Era and spent ages strengthening the body, seeking the Worldheart and Subhuti's spacetime techniques, and secretly enslaving major powers. The apparently eccentric neutral scholar is thus a carefully maintained cover for the Mindlord. (Chapters 502–748)

Seizure of the Endwar

After Demonheart dies and the alliances prepare peace, Yuan reveals fifth-stage heartforce, controlled major powers, and God Emperor Blacklotus's techniques. His black-lotus formation kills formations and forces major powers to self-detonate in attempts to exhaust him. Ning finally pierces the possessed body's forehead. Yuan kills his own soulslaves and releases his treasures to fake complete death, hoping to hide the true body outside the Three Realms. (Chapters 726–755)

Death of the Mindlord

Intelligence later confirms that the apparent Yuan was the Mindlord, one of Blacklotus's Nine Divine Generals. Ning finds the true body in the Blacklotus Empire, where the Mindlord invokes the earlier gift of the [Heart Sutra] but cannot escape responsibility for the Three Realms' dead. Ning kills him, ending the identity behind both bodies. (Chapters 759–799)

Appearance and personality

Yuan commonly appears as an amiable old gardener carrying a horsetail whisk. He is genuinely curious about techniques and capable of generous instruction, which makes the disguise convincing. Once exposed, scholarly detachment becomes contempt: he calls Three Realms cultivators yokels, treats enslaved friends as expendable tools, and covets rare techniques and the Worldheart. Abilities and cultivation

Fifth-stage heartforce and Heart Sutra

Yuan develops numerous unsystematic but profound methods for applying heartforce to legs, body, fingers, hair, swords, treasures, and the soul. His fifth-stage heartforce can directly assault Ning's soul and creates a real-world shockwave when stopped by a soul-lock defense. The failed ambush demonstrates its counter: specialized soul protection can reflect or block even terrifying invisible force. (Chapters 502, 726, and 743)

Soul enslavement

He secretly takes control of major powers including Fuxi and Gonggong without exposing visible flaws. The bindings let him command them in formations and kill them remotely when the possessed body dies. This control is strong but not free of strategic limits; soulslaves remain less useful against an opponent able to destroy them effortlessly. (Chapters 747–755)

Black lotus techniques

Yuan centers enslaved squads on a three-petaled black lotus that draws chaos power and grinds attacking formations apart. He also uses a Blacklotus Guard capable of withstanding immense raw strength. These arts were personally taught by God Emperor Blacklotus; Ning's later power can breach them, especially after repeated self-detonations drain Yuan's divine power. (Chapters 749–764)

Possession and bodily limits

The Mindlord occupies Yuan's body and cultivates it into a major power, but possession leaves the body too slow to escape Ji Ning near the end. Death of this body does not kill the distant true body because the two identities are connected through the possessor rather than a normal Primaltwin arrangement. (Chapters 748, 753–755, and 793–799)
