Lord Houwu is an Otherverse Lord who turns a captured Sithe war-fort into Houwu City, the cultivator civilization's only city and principal refuge in the dangerous Blazesun Domain. Bold enough to establish that sanctuary and to ask Ji Ning for his complete Dao, he is also pragmatic enough to yield before powers he cannot survive.

Biography

Building a refuge in the Blazesun Domain

Houwu acquires a powerful Sithe war-fort and makes the unconventional choice to place it inside the Blazesun Domain rather than protect a safer homeland. He names the fortress Houwu City and becomes its Lord Governor. Its formations create the only settled cultivator refuge in the entire domain, giving visiting Hegemons, Eternal Emperors, and a few daring Daolords somewhere to recover between expeditions. The choice makes Houwu influential, but it also places him and his city permanently beneath the shadow of the far stronger Blazesun Ruler. (Chapters 1301–1302)

When Divine Sovereign Goldsun learns that Nuwa and Patriarch Treewind are resting in the city, he asks Houwu to keep them there until Ji Ning arrives. Houwu conveys the message politely and makes clear that he will not permit the party to leave. Treewind and Imperator Jade Rainbow recognize that the courtesy is for Darknorth's sake and that the normally overbearing governor would use force if necessary. Once Ning arrives, Houwu opens the city's sealed barriers, leads a grand welcoming delegation, and seats Nuwa beside the guest of honor at a banquet designed to make the most of a rare visit from the era's greatest Daolord. The failed request for the Eternal Omega Sword Dao

At the banquet's end, Houwu kneels and asks Ning to accept his service and transmit the complete Dao to him. His request goes far beyond ordinary guidance: he wants access to the unprecedented Eternal Omega Sword Dao. Ning tests the sincerity behind that ambition by demanding Houwu City, every treasure Houwu owns, and obedience without any promise of regular instruction. Houwu cannot surrender the Sithe treasures for which he risked his life. Ning rejects him, and Flamewing later explains that a wholehearted answer would probably have earned acceptance without Ning actually taking his property. Houwu's failure reveals the boundary of his risk-taking—he longs to progress, but not enough to abandon the power and security he already possesses. (Chapters 1303–1304)

The Blazesun Ruler's demand

The city soon faces more than two hundred Hegemonic creatures led by Walker Scarletbind and two other powerful beings. Acting for the Blazesun Ruler, they demand Nuwa, Treewind, and three companions as punishment for raiding a hidden estate and destroying the Jadeheart Lamp. Houwu knows the customary response: resist just enough to create an escape opportunity, because the city cannot win a prolonged war against the domain's ruler. Ning's presence makes him hesitate. He calls the cultivators inside and looks to Darknorth for the decision rather than either surrendering his guests or committing the city to certain destruction. (Chapters 1305–1307)

Ning's sword domain halts the attackers, and his killing of the Eight-Armed Hill ends the immediate assault. Houwu watches in envy, still wishing he had received the Eternal Omega Sword Dao, but accepts that the lost opportunity will not return. He is satisfied that witnessing Ning's sword strike has given him an unforgettable glimpse of a higher path. After Ning departs, the Blazesun Ruler arrives in person. Houwu bows, truthfully reports that Darknorth has left, and conceals nothing, thereby preventing the ruler from turning his anger on the city. (Chapters 1307–1309)

Houwu remains famous long afterward as a major power who would have accepted servitude for instruction from Ning. The corpus last mentions him while emphasizing how extraordinary it is for Ning to accept another personal disciple when even Houwu failed to obtain that opportunity. (Chapter 1386)

Appearance and personality

Houwu appears as a green-robed elder. He is ceremonious and socially perceptive when dealing with a superior, arranging processions, seating, and a banquet to honor Ning. To peers and weaker visitors, he has a reputation as an arrogant and overbearing bully.

Risk defines both his achievements and flaws. He dares to plant a war-fort in the Blazesun Domain and to make a request no other guest would voice. Yet his Dao-heart does not sustain the ultimate price Ning names. He is neither recklessly suicidal nor cowardly: when the Blazesun Ruler's forces threaten his city, he searches for a survivable compromise and recognizes which powers cannot be offended.

Abilities and cultivation

Otherverse Lord cultivation

Houwu is an Otherverse Lord, placing him among the strongest Eternal Emperors beneath the Chaosverse's supreme figures. The rank implies control of an otherverse and power above ordinary Hegemons, but Ning judges the three leaders sent by the Blazesun Ruler to be stronger than most Otherverse Lords. Houwu therefore cannot safely defeat that expedition, much less the Blazesun Ruler himself. The corpus does not name Houwu's core Dao or display a personal ultimate attack. Houwu City

Houwu City's primary function is defense. The enormous levitating fortress is covered in mysterious runes and barrier formations; these remain sealed under normal conditions and regulate passage into and out of the city. Because it is a large-scale Sithe war machine rather than a handheld weapon, it can shelter a population and withstand dangers that would destroy ordinary settlements. Hegemon Goodsong states that it can easily defend against the Blazesun Domain's usual threats and could resist even the Blazesun Ruler for a time, though Houwu's associates believe only a few inhabitants might escape if that ruler truly attacks. The war-fort magnifies Houwu's political power as much as his battle power. Cultivators depend on it as their sole refuge, and the governor can close the barriers, host major powers, or prevent guests from departing. Its protection is substantial but not absolute; the Blazesun Ruler's Sithe warship and Exalt-level personal strength remain beyond what Houwu is willing to test. (Chapters 1301–1302 and 1309)

Houwu maintains long-range contacts with figures such as Divine Sovereign Goldsun and receives news about travelers staying within his city. This network lets him locate Nuwa's party and relay Ning's message across great distances. He also knows the local races, recognizes crimson bloodfiends, Walker Scarletbind, and the Blazesun Ruler's vessel, and understands the customary rules governing clashes between cultivators and native beings. These are administrative and experiential capabilities, not a named divination art. (Chapters 1300–1301 and 1305–1309)
