Granny Shadow
Granny Shadow is Ji Ninefire's younger sister and one of the two publicly acknowledged Zifu Disciples of the early Ji clan. She helps defend the clan from Snowdragon Mountain, accepts a place in a planned sacrificial last stand, and later becomes the final survivor of her generation after an unexpected breakthrough.
Biography
Elder of the Central Prefecture
Shadow has lived for nearly four centuries and spent roughly three hundred years as a Zifu Disciple. Alongside her elder brother Ninefire, she stands at the pinnacle of the Central Prefecture. She personally teaches Ji Mo swordplay, giving her student unusual status among the younger generation. After visiting Serpentwing Lake to assess Ji Ning, she describes his sword technique as unfathomably deep and accepts that he, not her own pupil, is the clan's greatest future prospect. Discovery of the mine
Shadow accompanies Ninefire and her old servant Ah Xing when an elemental disturbance reveals the enormous ore mine. She volunteers to investigate the unknown danger herself, but Ah Xing descends first because his devotion will not let her take the initial risk. The mine excites her until Ninefire explains that its scale will draw powers the clan cannot resist. She then helps survey it and supports the attempt to transfer it to Grand Xia rather than let apparent wealth destroy the clan. (Chapters 87–90)
When Dong Ziqi attacks Ning during negotiations, Shadow confronts him in open anger. She still restrains herself while Ninefire searches for a surrender that preserves the lineage. Once Snowdragon Mountain refuses the clan any secure homeland, Shadow joins the prepared ambush rather than accept eventual extinction. She, Ninefire, Ah Xing, and Ning attack the isolated He siblings, with Shadow's flying swords contributing to the careful ranged pressure that exhausts the trapped enemies. (Chapters 91–100)
Oxhorn Mountain
At Oxhorn Mountain, Shadow helps prepare the layered delaying formations and serves as one of the Zifu controllers within the Netherwyrm Heavenlock Formation. She shares elemental energy and incoming damage with the other anchors while Ninefire directs the dragon pearl. The elders protect Ning when he enters a critical cultivation breakthrough, resisting Adept Xu's distant attacks rather than summon him prematurely. (Chapters 107–124)
Nong Zidao eventually exposes the nether fog, and a grand sealing formation prevents retreat. Ninefire orders a sequence of sacrifices to delay the enemy. Shadow accepts that she will attack after Ah Xing and die before Truekeep and Ninefire. When Ning refuses to abandon them, she threatens to kill herself immediately if he returns, using his love for the elders to force him toward survival. Ning later breaks back into the formation with new power and prevents every remaining sacrifice. (Chapters 123–135)
Last of her generation
Years later, Ninefire and Ah Xing both reach the ends of their lifespans. Shadow withdraws into the Dao-repository and waits for her own death, only to achieve an unexpected breakthrough that extends her life. She welcomes Ning after his long absence, tells him that the dead elders learned of his Conclave victory, and becomes one of the few people with direct access to him while the Ji clan hides his movements from enemy intelligence. (Chapters 394–402)
Appearance and personality
Shadow is an elderly woman with a hoarse, gravelly voice. Her anger is immediate when the clan or Ning is insulted, but she can suppress it when an impulsive attack would endanger everyone. She is frank about differences in talent, deeply attached to Ninefire and Ah Xing, and completely prepared to spend her life so the younger generation can escape. Her later warning about Stillwater's chaos shows that survival does not make her less cautious or protective. (Chapters 84–135 and 394–395)
Abilities and cultivation
Zifu cultivation
Shadow is a long-established peak figure within the local Ji clan, but its low-grade Ki Refining methods limit her to the Zifu stage for centuries. Her experience makes her stronger and steadier than ordinary members of the same stage, yet elite Snowdragon disciples and Wanxiang Adepts remain beyond her in direct power. Her combat value therefore increases sharply when formations let the elders pool their strength. (Chapters 84–86 and 94–127)
Flying-sword combat
Shadow controls three flying swords that glow with faint fire. She uses them from range against the He siblings, coordinating with Ninefire's poison sword, Ah Xing, and Ning. The elders deliberately avoid close combat against enemies using forbidden arts, maintaining pressure until a safe opening appears. No separately named sword-art is established, so the documented strength lies in disciplined multi-sword control and tactical coordination. (Chapters 94–96)
Netherwyrm Heavenlock Formation
Shadow controls one of the formation's four secondary components while Ninefire commands the central dragon pearl. The structure lets five Zifu Disciples combine elemental energy, distribute damage, create a netherwyrm, hide behind disorienting fog, and emerge through chosen corridors for attacks. Shadow's contribution is essential to the complete formation but does not grant her independent command of all its effects. (Chapters 107–127)
Instruction
She personally trains Ji Mo in swordplay and can evaluate Ning's technique well enough to recognize that its depth exceeds meaningful comparison with her pupil. The chapters establish her as an experienced instructor, but do not identify a named school or a unique transmitted sword manual. (Chapter 84)
Relationships
- Ji Ninefire: Ninefire is Shadow's elder brother, co-leader, and formation commander. She accepts his final defense plan and later outlives him. (Chapters 84–394)
- Ji Ning: Shadow recognizes Ning as the clan's future, fights beside him, and threatens self-sacrifice to make him escape. She later welcomes him home after his Conclave victory. (Chapters 84–395)
- Ah Xing: Her lifelong servant repeatedly places himself between Shadow and danger. He joins her in the Snowdragon battle and later dies at the end of his lifespan. (Chapters 87–394)
