Immortal Diancai
Immortal Diancai is Ji Ning's first formal sword master, an austere Black-White College Immortal whose careful guidance, personal courage, and successful Celestial Tribulation make him a model of the path Ning first hoped to follow.
Biography
Recognizing Ji Ning's sword heart
Diancai notices Ning resonating with sword-intent preserved at the Black-White College and understands that the new disciple is receiving more than a superficial impression. He does not immediately interfere or smother that insight with instruction. During the Dao Debates, he and Immortal Fivecraze watch Ning's scattered thoughts fall away until only the desire to fight remains; Diancai identifies the ordeal as a baptism of Ning's Dao-heart, a pressure through which the young swordsman must find his own answer. (Chapters 161–163 and 176–177)
Afterward, Diancai accepts Ning as his first disciple. The choice is significant for both of them. Ning gains a master who shares his devotion to the sword, while the withdrawn Diancai assumes responsibility for transmitting his understanding to another person. His teaching style remains restrained: he points Ning toward the principles behind sword cultivation, gives him room to test them, and intervenes most forcefully when the disciple faces danger beyond what training alone can answer. (Chapters 163, 176, and 210)
Standing behind his disciple
Ning's killing of Youngflame Nong brings Patriarch Arcanum to the Black-White College, but Diancai does not distance himself from his disciple to avoid political danger. He stands with the college while it refuses to surrender Ning casually. Later, when Ning is trapped within a hostile formation, Diancai and Immortal Hunchmont attack from outside. Diancai summons five Immortal swords, turns them into vast mountain-like rainbows, and unites their force into a single five-peaked assault. The attack is not detached assistance: his urgency makes clear that he is trying to reach a disciple who may die before the formation gives way. (Chapters 283 and 432–437)
Celestial Tribulation
Diancai eventually decides to attempt the Celestial Tribulation, with Fivecraze and Ning guarding the site. The ordeal forces him to face wind, fire, thunder, and finally the demonheart trial without another cultivator carrying the burden for him. He survives all four phases and becomes only the second Celestial Immortal produced by the Black-White College, turning a solitary sword cultivator's breakthrough into a defining achievement for the entire school. (Chapters 395–418)
His advancement does not remove him from the wider crisis. Diancai joins the mass gathering of Celestial Immortals as the Three Realms' wars intensify and studies the force unleashed through the Heaven Punisher Formation with open excitement. He remains connected to Ning long after their original college years, appearing among the old teachers and companions preserved in the world Ning ultimately protects. (Chapters 509–512, 992, 1180, 1285, and 1387)
Appearance and personality
Diancai is a black-robed, austere sword cultivator whose reserve can make him seem distant. His actions show a more complex temperament: he is patient enough to let Ning's insight develop unaided, proud enough to attempt the Celestial Tribulation, and emotionally committed enough to attack a deadly formation in desperation when Ning is trapped. Worthy swordplay and large-scale formations can also draw visible excitement from him despite his usual severity. (Chapters 161, 176–177, 402–418, 437, and 512)
Abilities and cultivation
Sword Dao foundation
Diancai is a specialized Sword Immortal who recognizes changes in sword-intent and Dao-heart. His instruction emphasizes comprehension and the inner structure of swordplay, not merely memorizing techniques, which is why he can identify Ning's Dao Debate ordeal as a genuine baptism. (Chapters 161–163 and 176–177)
Five Immortal swords
He controls five Immortal-ranked flying swords at once. Each becomes a mountain-like sword-rainbow, after which the five combine into a single assault shaped like united peaks; the method concentrates several weapon trajectories into one formation-breaking strike. (Chapter 437)
Celestial Immortal cultivation
Diancai survives the complete Celestial Tribulation and escapes the recurring uncertainty faced by Loose Immortals. The wind, fire, and thunder phases test body and energy, while the demonheart phase attacks the cultivator's mind; success therefore confirms both power and Dao-heart stability. (Chapters 402 and 418)
Formation participation
After ascending, he can contribute Celestial-Immortal power to the great formations assembled for the Three Realms' wars and understand the tremendous force channeled through a Heaven Punisher. (Chapters 509–512)
