Daolord Badlands — Desolate Era

Daolord Badlands is the founder of the Badlands Court and one of the foremost Daolords of Numerancy in the Endless Territories. Although he is not celebrated principally as a fighter, his predictions, formation knowledge, and willingness to risk an avatar make him indispensable during the expeditions into Emperor Waveshift's domains.

Biography

Founder of the Badlands Court

Badlands establishes the court that bears his name and makes it the dominant organization of the Badlands Territory. His authority protects Waveshift City and gives the Court's disciples broad security throughout the region, yet his own home is a quiet thatched residence rather than a grand palace. When Daolord Solesky arrives, Badlands receives him personally, pours wine, and immediately offers to help if the request is within his power. He lives there with his Dao-companion Yan'er, whose own advancement to the Daolord level makes them an unusually fortunate pair among cultivators. (Chapters 769, 787, and 815)

Solesky asks Badlands to guide him through the dangerous Waveshift world. Badlands has already used Numerancy to recognize that forcing his way through the Windsource Ruins could kill him, and he understands that the new expedition may cost him a powerful avatar. He nevertheless accepts. Because that avatar normally anchors the Badlands Court's defensive formation, he spends three years creating a weaker replacement while leaving his true body behind to protect the Court. His decision is therefore a calculated sacrifice of both personal resources and institutional security for a friend. (Chapters 815–817)

First expedition into the Waveshift world

Badlands' avatar and Solesky disappear into the Waveshift world for far longer than expected. More than a century later, Badlands' true body visits Ji Ning, explains that the pair are trapped but not in immediate danger, and gives Ning a Badlands insignia. The talisman grants Ning the standing of a formal Court member in the territory, providing practical protection after Solesky can no longer escort him. Badlands neither dramatizes the danger nor offers false reassurance: he estimates at least a million years to escape the current formation and warns that more hazards will follow. (Chapter 818)

Over the long expedition, Badlands and Solesky survive repeated dangers and acquire unusually valuable knowledge of the Waveshift world. Once news of Emperor Waveshift's Voidsea Jadeseals spreads, other Daolords try to force that information from them. Badlands and Yan'er withdraw to an ordinary mortal city, living quietly in a mountain villa where hostile cultivators cannot locate them. His response demonstrates the defensive side of Numerancy: the best answer to an approaching threat is often to leave before the enemy can act. (Chapters 1076–1078)

The struggle for the Voidsea Jadeseals

Inside the reopened Waveshift Realm, Badlands' avatar and Solesky are pursued by Fiendqueen Dustrain's group. Badlands uses changing, nested formations to keep them alive, but the flight leaves Solesky badly injured. Ning and Ninedust Sectlord drive away the pursuers and wait while Solesky recovers. Badlands then joins their squad, candidly explaining that Emperor Waveshift's arrangements are too profound for him to overturn: he cannot divine the hidden seals safely and might be misled if he tries. (Chapters 1083–1088)

That limitation does not make him useless. When Solesky obtains a Voidsea Jadeseal and the group must escape, Badlands calculates that retracing their route leads to certain failure and identifies the only direction containing a chance of survival. He continues recalculating as circumstances change, helping the group evade concentrations of hostile Daolords. After the seal is secured, he accompanies Ning, Ninedust, Winesage, and Dawnstar toward Crimsonwave Temple. His formation awareness and advance warnings allow the alliance to avoid many hazards and reach the temple before the competing squads. (Chapters 1090–1113)

Warning before the Jadefire Realm

Badlands later investigates the report that Ninedust is trapped in the Jadefire Realm. He confirms the peril is real but recognizes the information as bait aimed at Ning, then sends that conclusion through Solesky. He cannot calculate Ning's personal outcome because the Omega Dao clouds divination, so his warning distinguishes what the evidence establishes from what even his art cannot reveal. Ning understands the trap and enters with that knowledge rather than walking into it blindly. (Chapters 1215 and 1232)

Appearance and personality

Badlands commonly appears as an azure-robed man. He and Yan'er live in a secluded, understated home within the Court, matching his preference for privacy over display. He is hospitable to friends, measured in speech, and comfortable admitting the limits of his own art. He will risk an expensive avatar for Solesky, aid Ning without demanding repayment, and guide a group containing far stronger combatants without trying to claim their prestige. His caution is strategic rather than timid. Badlands leaves the Windsource Ruins when Numerancy predicts likely death, hides when weaker Daolords target his information, and refuses to challenge Emperor Waveshift's design through pride. In immediate danger, however, he stays with Solesky, repeatedly recalculates escape routes, and accepts that his avatar may be destroyed. (Chapters 815, 1078, 1090–1111)

Abilities and cultivation

Samsara Daolord

Badlands is a powerful Samsara Daolord and the central combat deterrent behind the Badlands Court. Solesky is somewhat stronger, while Badlands and Daolord Waterwind stand below Daolord Azuresky but above several neighboring Daolords. Badlands himself emphasizes that his specialty is not direct battle. His value lies in preventing unfavorable fights, choosing terrain, and making other experts' strength usable at the correct moment. (Chapters 815, 820, and 1112)

Dao of Numerancy

Badlands is ranked among the top three Daolords of Numerancy. The art lets him model likely futures, assess danger, and identify routes whose outcomes differ from surrounding possibilities. At the Windsource Ruins he foresees a high chance of death and withdraws. During the Voidsea Jadeseal struggle he predicts the coming mass casualties, rejects an escape route that leads to failure, and finds the single direction that preserves a chance to survive. These are not vague intuitions: his conclusions repeatedly change the group's route and keep its members alive. (Chapters 815, 1090, and 1094–1096)

Numerancy also helps with information and threat analysis. Badlands verifies Ninedust's captivity while detecting that Ning is the intended target, and he can perceive danger early enough to hide himself and Yan'er before enemies arrive. The discipline becomes harder when more powerful variables are involved. Emperor Waveshift's formation can deliberately obscure or misdirect his calculations, while Ning's Omega Dao appears as fog even when Badlands knows the person he is trying to study. He therefore treats divination as evidence with limits, not omniscience. (Chapters 1078, 1088, 1215, and 1232)

Cultivators skilled in Numerancy are generally adept at formations, and Badlands demonstrates that connection throughout the Waveshift Realm. He reads layered natural formations, shelters with Solesky inside thirteen changing loops, and chooses routes through hazards that ordinary scouts cannot safely evaluate. His knowledge lets their party exploit the realm's own barriers against stronger pursuers and later avoid enough dangers to reach Crimsonwave Temple first. (Chapters 1083–1084 and 1113)

Avatars and institutional defense

Badlands maintains a powerful avatar that can merge into the Badlands Court's protective formation as its core. Sending it away materially weakens the organization, so he creates a replacement and keeps his true body at home. An avatar carries his knowledge and consciousness but is much weaker than his true body; Badlands accepts its possible destruction as the price of guiding Solesky. This distinction explains why he can be strategically decisive in the Waveshift Realm without serving as the squad's frontline fighter. (Chapters 815–817, 1084, and 1111)

Relationships

Daolord Solesky: A close friend for whom Badlands risks a valuable avatar. Their shared expeditions produce both danger and the information that later shapes the Voidsea Jadeseal struggle. (Chapters 815–818 and 1076–1113)
