Role in the wider conflict

Valsa learns that another Flamebearer has appeared while she is designing a component of her Regalia. Rather than rush into a single uncertain strike, she questions Scar about the target's hidden nature and orders caution until they understand the opportunity. Her restraint serves an audacious motive: she refuses to accept the Emperors' preference for her cousin and intends to seize fate herself, with her father's support and a stockpile of tokens. She survives Zac's countermeasures and remains an important comparison for later sealbearers, while the years required to take her ring show that her gains were costly rather than effortless.
