Role in the wider conflict

Karz began as a starving survivor trapped where even a rancid ten-legged creature was precious. Determined to escape, he killed and forced down every scrap of energy-rich flesh despite sickness, while an immense shrouded mountain stirred an inexplicable hunger in him. That choice to endure humiliation and pain rather than waste opportunity established appetite, survival, and ascent as the foundations of his later path. (Chapter 639)

Retrospective accounts place Karz in public light as an imperial leader while Laondio advised and manipulated from the shadows. Later speculation suggests Laondio exiled Karz’s very existence while monopolizing a Dao Peak, meaning Karz’s public rise ended in an erasure so complete that even its mechanics remain uncertain. Appearance and personality

Karz’s early survival shows an unusual hunger responsive to the mysterious floating mountain.
