Biography

The Hunt and the Holy Empire

Sergio adopts Kristina at ten and oversees years of coercive theological education and painful rituals designed to make her resemble the church's ideal of Anise. When Eugene Lionheart arrives in Yuras, Sergio tests his recognition by the Holy Sword and covertly prepares inquisitors in case the Hero fails his standards. Sergio later leads the final Saint ritual at the Fount of Light, repeatedly carving stigmata into Kristina while sacred water heals her wounds. Eugene interrupts the ceremony, and Sergio declares both Hero and Saint Candidate fallen when Kristina rejects the imposed identity. After a prolonged battle of divine magic and martial arts, Sergio sacrifices his remaining body to his stigmata, becomes living light, and is finally destroyed by Eugene and the Holy Sword. (Chapters 188 and 191–194)

Appearance and personality

Sergio appears as a middle-aged man with a benevolent expression, a lithe and powerful body, and a clear, piercing gaze. He wears black priestly robes, a white mantle, a cross necklace, and a red cardinal's cloth symbolizing martyrdom. His calm courtesy and professed concern mask surveillance, coercion, and absolute conviction that his own interpretation of the Light justifies cruelty. (Chapters 185–186)

Abilities and powers

Sergio is a combat monk with exceptional divine power and close-quarters skill. His stigmata can amplify barriers, absorb scattered divine power, rapidly restore mutilated flesh, summon three angels for high-level blessings, and support sealing spells and the barrier-piercing Bow of Light. These miracles consume blood and strain the stigmata. His final technique devotes his flesh and identity to the mark, transforming him into light at the cost of selfhood, yet the Holy Sword ultimately overrides that state and destroys him. (Chapters 192–194)

  • Kristina Rogeris: Sergio is Kristina's adoptive father and principal controller, treating her less as a daughter than as material to perfect into a Saint. (Chapters 186, 188, and 622)
