Pope Aeuryus is the long-serving head of Yuras's Church of Light. He helps direct the institution's artificial-Saint program, then yields to Eugene and Kristina when their divine legitimacy makes armed resistance both politically and theologically untenable. Biography

The Hunt and the Holy Empire

Aeuryus waits in the Vatican to judge Raphael's mission against Eugene and Kristina, but the group enters with the supposed captives fully armed. After Eugene severs Aeuryus's hand and Kristina displays eight genuine Wings of Light, the Pope abandons resistance, sacrifices a more defiant cardinal, and negotiates for the Church's survival. Kristina condemns the hierarchy's attempt to manufacture and possess divine power while acknowledging that Yuras has also saved believers; Aeuryus accepts the new order rather than beginning a civil conflict. He later supports Eugene at the Knight March, personally travels to Shimuin after the Demon King of Fury's defeat, pledges Yuras's authority to the Hero, and facilitates Eugene's final prewar address as Yuras's Divine Emperor. Appearance and personality

Aeuryus is an older man who has led the Church for decades. In the Vatican audience chamber he wears a three-layered crown and platinum ring and carries a staff; later narration also treats his age and long reign as conspicuous. The corpus does not supply a stable hair color, eye color, height, or build. (Chapters 200 and 387)

He is a sincere zealot, a cautious institutional survivor, and a skilled political operator. Aeuryus defends the Church's brutal program as an attempt to restore absent divine intervention, but recognizes when continued resistance would destroy the institution's legitimacy. His later devotion to Eugene is genuine, though he also uses public pledges to maneuver other nations into the same alliance. (Chapters 201, 233, 391–392, and 572)

Abilities and powers

Aeuryus possesses substantial divine power through faith and artificially implanted Stigmata. He can form a pair of Wings of Light and reattach a severed hand by merging the flesh, demonstrating supernatural healing and bodily modification. These powers do not place him near Kristina's genuine eight-wing manifestation or Eugene's Holy Sword: he is disarmed and held at swordpoint before he can mount an effective defense. Relationships

  • Eugene Lionheart: Aeuryus first prepares to judge Eugene, then acknowledges the Holy Sword's master, supports him publicly, pledges Yuras's authority, and treats him as the Divine Emperor before the final war. (Chapters 199–203, 233, 391–392, and 572)
  • Kristina Rogeris: Kristina's genuine Wings of Light break the hierarchy's theological position. She strikes Aeuryus, condemns the artificial-Saint program, and defines the limits of the Church's past justification. (Chapter 201)
  • Raphael Martinez: Raphael returns from the Fount prepared to depose Aeuryus if necessary. His surprise attack helps force the audience, after which Aeuryus chooses negotiation rather than oppose the Crusader and the divine claimants together. (Chapters 199–201)
  • Oseris Animus: Aeuryus helps pressure Oseris during the victory settlement and then leads the rulers in pledging national authority to Eugene. (Chapters 391–392)
