Laman Schulhov
Laman Schulhov is a desert warrior from Nahama who serves as captain of the Second Division of the Emir of Kajitan's Red Sand Warriors before entering Eugene Lionheart's service. He later joins the Knights of the White Lion and becomes Gerhard Lionheart's personal escort. (Chapters 59–73 and 249)
Biography
Nahama, Samar, and Sienna's Legacy
Laman is ordered to prevent Eugene from entering the Kazani Desert without being told why. After Eugene defeats his party, Laman accompanies him as guide and nominal escort, gradually discovering that his master cooperated with a desertification scheme that sacrificed Laman's own home and people. He still tries to protect Eugene from Hamel's Death Knight and carries him out of the desert after the underground battle. Unable to continue giving his life to the Emir, and indebted to Eugene for repeatedly saving him, Laman leaves Nahama and accepts the undignified role of valet. He adapts to household life, keeps training, enters the White Lion Knights, and serves as Gerhard's bodyguard. His local knowledge makes him useful again during the Hauria campaign, while his absolute loyalty later earns him custody of Eugene's will. (Chapters 59–75, 115, 131, 249, 467, 553, and 571)
Appearance and personality
Laman is a rugged desert man whose original shaggy beard makes him look older than his stated age of thirty-two. At the Lionheart estate he shaves it and wears a butler's uniform, a change that initially clashes with his warrior identity. He is honest, proud, loyal, and somewhat literal. That loyalty can make him naive, but it is not blind forever: learning how Nahama treated his village breaks his service to the Emir, while gratitude and chosen devotion bind him firmly to Eugene and the Lionheart household. (Chapters 59–73, 75, and 115)
Abilities and powers
Laman is a skilled professional warrior capable of forming gray sword-force around his kukri and a mana shield around his body. His control and experience are sufficient to command an elite guard division, survive harsh desert travel without sleep, and serve as a local guide, but Eugene defeats him comprehensively and exposes the gap between Laman and the story's exceptional fighters. No named personal technique or later rank is established. (Chapters 59–61)
After settling in Kiehl, Laman continues training with the Lionheart main-house knights rather than allowing domestic work to replace martial practice. Eugene judges him below White Lion captain level but skilled enough to be welcomed by most noble estates and capable of protecting the annex until stronger knights arrive. He later qualifies for the Knights of the White Lion and serves as Gerhard's escort; the corpus does not show a later duel that would establish how far his swordsmanship advances. (Chapters 115, 131, and 249)
Relationships
- Eugene Lionheart: Their relationship begins with surveillance and a one-sided defeat. Eugene repeatedly saves Laman, and Laman repays that debt through chosen service, local guidance, protection of Eugene's family, and trusted custody of his will. (Chapters 59–75, 249, 467, and 553–571)
- Gerhard Lionheart: Eugene assigns Laman to look after Gerhard, first within the annex and later as his formal personal escort. (Chapters 75, 171, 249, and 467)
- Nina: Nina becomes Laman's immediate senior in the annex, imposes the household dress code that costs him his beard, and directs his work while helping him adjust to life in Kiehl. (Chapters 73, 75, and 115)
- Tairi Al-Madani: Laman initially serves the Emir of Kajitan with unquestioning loyalty. The revelation that the regime knowingly sacrificed his village ends that devotion, and Tairi allows Eugene to take him away. (Chapters 59–73)
