Pearl of Life

The Pearl of Life is a translucent pearl containing a hazy green life force. Linley recovered one from Queen Mother Lachapelle and blood-bound it into his body, gaining exceptional physical regeneration and the ability to direct its vitality into others. It preserves a Saint's body rather than soul or spiritual energy, and a second pearl later found in the Necropolis establishes that the artifact is not unique. (Chapters 350–352, 354–355, 386)

History

Taken from Queen Mother Lachapelle

After killing Queen Mother Lachapelle, Linley found a round object in her remains and initially mistook it for a magical-beast core. The Six-Eyed Ni-Lions identified it as a Pearl of Life and explained that it had supplied the Queen Mother's astonishing regeneration. When Linley blood-bound it, the pearl merged into his body and released life force through his muscles, bones, and organs. (Chapters 350–351)

Survival in the Necropolis

The pearl repeatedly repaired Linley's physical injuries during the Necropolis expedition, including damage that would otherwise have been crippling. It could not protect him from the Beholder's soul-freezing attack, however, and enemies continued to treat soul attacks as the way around his regeneration. (Chapters 352, 358–359, 375)

A Thorium Devil carried another Pearl of Life. After Fain killed it, Desri recovered that pearl and Fain bound it, proving that Linley's artifact was one of multiple examples. Fain's experience also confirmed that the pearl restored bodily damage but did not replenish expended spiritual energy. (Chapters 354–355, 357–359)

Healing other people

Linley eventually learned to direct the pearl's life force through his hand. He used it to repair Yale's body and later healed Cena and a wounded plainsman. Although Linley considered giving his pearl to Wharton if Wharton remained a Saint, no such transfer occurs in the cited record; Linley's later healing use confirms that he retained it. Abilities and properties

Once blood-bound, the pearl resides inside the user's body and saturates it with life force. If the soul remains intact and even a fragment of the body survives, that force can regenerate lost flesh and organs at extraordinary speed. The user can also channel the vitality outward to repair another person's physical injuries. (Chapters 351, 358–359, 386, 408, 429)

The protection has explicit limits. It cannot defend, restore, or replenish the soul or spiritual energy, and total destruction of the body leaves nothing from which to regenerate. Deities already regenerate divine bodies through divine power, so the pearl is principally valuable to Saints rather than a substitute for divine physiology. (Chapters 351–352, 355, 375)

Ownership and custody

Queen Mother Lachapelle held the pearl until Linley killed her and recovered it. Linley's blood binding then merged the artifact into his body, establishing both custody and use. His thought of someday giving it to Wharton was only a possibility, not a completed transfer, and the last cited appearance still has Linley channeling its power. The second pearl found on the Thorium Devil followed a separate custody chain and should not be confused with Linley's. (Chapters 350–351, 354–355, 368, 429)
