Zassler

Zassler is an ancient, sharp-tongued necromancer whose rescue from the Radiant Church gives Linley Baruch both a powerful summoner and an experienced adviser. His undead forces help defeat the Church’s agents, but his rarer knowledge of souls becomes still more consequential: Zassler recognizes Soulseed domination, traces the Grand Warlock’s operation, and gives Linley the analysis needed to free Yale Dawson (Chapters 193–194, 325–326, 381–382, 386–390).

Biography

Captive Necromancer and New Ally

The Radiant Church pursues Zassler across empires and the Anarchic Lands, losing five ninth-rank experts before poison and a larger force finally capture him. Their goal is not merely punishment: by extracting the secrets of Necromantic Magic, they hope to train their own hidden corps of necromancers. Linley disrupts that plan, breaks Zassler’s antimagic manacles, and discovers that the prisoner shares his determination to destroy the Church. Zassler initially insists that an unsolicited rescue creates no debt, but he immediately joins the fight, summoning golden skeletons and zombies to help eliminate their mutual enemies before any can report Linley’s location (Chapters 193–194).

The battlefield partnership becomes a durable place within Linley’s household. Zassler helps anticipate Church movements, participates in ambush preparations, and learns enough about Linley’s techniques to assess the danger faced by his allies. In the Anarchic Lands he serves as a trusted intermediary, including guiding Delia Leon to Linley’s secluded training place. When the conflict with the Radiant Church becomes open warfare, Zassler fights among Saints, using departed souls and spiritual magic against Angels before urging Linley to treat the Church’s broken agreement as freedom to pursue final revenge. The former captive has thus become an agent in dismantling the institution that sought to exploit him (Chapters 203, 238, 295, 325–326).

Necropolis and Divine Conflict

After recently reaching the Saint level, Zassler wants to enter the Necropolis of the Gods but recognizes that his defensive ability is too limited to justify the risk. Remaining in Yulan lets him settle his score with the Radiant Church and later assume a different form of responsibility at Dragonblood Castle. During the continental war, Linley explicitly leaves the highly experienced necromancer among those who must interpret unexpected threats. Zassler challenges Wharton’s impulse to confront mysterious Saints, connects their appearance to Beirut’s warning, and argues that preserving the family matters more than gaining additional territory. When the dangers multiply, he helps present the crisis that brings Linley out of closed-door training (Chapters 332, 371, 378, 381–382).

That judgment becomes decisive when the Grand Warlock’s servants massacre cities and Yale poisons Linley. Zassler identifies Soulsilk, explains that Yale’s emotionless betrayal indicates Soulseed control, and establishes that killing the controlling Deity is the only way to free him. He then recognizes the soul-collecting crystal from a dead servant, reconstructs the Warlock’s need for captives, and deduces the likely location from Yale’s travel time and the Dawson Conglomerate’s nearby valley. Before Linley attacks, Zassler warns that a Death practitioner will favor soul attacks and be weaker in close combat. Linley’s victory frees Yale, while Zassler begins fusing a Death-style divine spark, moving from the Saint-level adviser toward the divine realm whose dangers he had helped unravel (Chapters 385–387, 390–391, 394–395).

Appearance and personality

Zassler appears as a thin, emaciated old man with a pale face, long white hair, and unusually long white eyebrows. His dark green eyes, skeletal build, and habit of smiling or laughing coldly reinforce the unsettling impression expected of a necromancer. Captivity weakens his body but does not make him submissive; he meets Linley’s Dragonform without fear and stands immediately once the antimagic restraints break (Chapters 193–194).

He is proud, sardonic, observant, and unsentimental in speech. Zassler proposes contests over enemy kills, laughs at boasts, and often frames sound caution as mockery of a more impulsive ally. Beneath that manner lies discipline rather than cruelty for its own sake: he refuses reckless battles, distinguishes controlled victims from willing enemies, and insists that Linley understand the Grand Warlock’s strengths before attacking. His loyalty is expressed through useful truth and preparation rather than warmth (Chapters 194, 238, 325–326, 381, 386–390).

Abilities and cultivation

As a ninth-rank Arch Magus necromancer, Zassler can use Wraith Call to summon combatants from the plane of departed souls. His early force includes two golden skeletal archers and three golden-furred zombies, each comparable to an early ninth-rank warrior, as well as more difficult summons such as an Undead Dragon. By the war against the Radiant Church, he has reached the Grand Magus Saint level and commands Saint-level departed souls in coordinated aerial combat (Chapters 193–194, 325, 332).

His necromancy extends beyond summoning. Zassler projects broad spiritual attacks that stun Angels long enough for his departed souls to strike, and he understands soul poisons, domination, collection, refinement, and the limits of each method. He can identify Soulsilk and Soulseeds from their effects, inspect a refined soul-collecting crystal, and infer the actions of a Deity-level Death practitioner while admitting that he cannot personally refine harvested souls at his current level (Chapters 325, 386–387, 390–391).

Zassler’s strengths are offset by weak close-combat defense, a limitation he acknowledges when declining the Necropolis. His advice to Linley reflects that same division: a Death practitioner’s soul attacks are most dangerous at range, so physical pressure offers a better chance of victory. He later begins fusing a Death-style divine spark suited to his established affinity, gaining a route beyond the Saint level through inherited understanding rather than an independent breakthrough (Chapters 332, 390, 395).

Relationships

  • Linley Baruch: Linley frees Zassler and gives him a place among his forces. Zassler repays that opportunity through combat, intelligence, strategic restraint, and detailed soul-lore, while consistently addressing Linley as his leader even when offering blunt corrections or warnings (Chapters 193–194, 203, 238, 295, 325–326, 381–382, 386–390).
  • Yale Dawson: Yale first appears to Zassler as Linley’s betrayer, but the necromancer identifies the attempted murder as Soulseed coercion. That distinction prevents Yale from being treated as a willing enemy and directs Linley toward killing the Grand Warlock to restore him (Chapters 386–387, 390, 394).
  • Wharton Baruch: Wharton relies on Zassler’s greater age and experience during Linley’s absences. Zassler counters Wharton’s willingness to challenge newly appeared Saints, helps him recognize the war’s hidden dangers, and joins him in preparing Linley for the confrontation with the Grand Warlock (Chapters 378, 381–382, 385–390).
  • Barker Armand: Barker and Zassler are fellow rescued enemies of the Radiant Church who become senior members of Linley’s forces. Their complementary strengths—Barker’s transformed defense and Zassler’s summons and soul magic—help the group survive battles that neither specialist would handle as effectively alone (Chapters 238, 325–326, 332, 371).
  • Delia Leon: Zassler receives Delia courteously when she reaches the Anarchic Lands and personally guides her to Linley’s isolated training site, acting as a trusted bridge between the household’s military and personal lives (Chapter 295).
  • The Radiant Church: The Church expends elite forces to capture Zassler and plans to extract his necromantic secrets. His refusal to submit, alliance with Linley, and later participation in the Church’s defeat turn that attempted exploitation into a source of strength for its principal enemy (Chapters 193–194, 325–326, 371).
