Companion to Alice

Rowling accompanies Alice during her engagement to Kalan and arrives often enough that Alice uses her approach as the signal to end a private meeting. She becomes the person beside Alice as the Debs clan's legal crisis and Linley's famous sculpture make the earlier relationship impossible to ignore. (Chapters 117–148)

When Fenlai collapses into panic, Rowling asks Alice what they should do instead of freezing alone. Alice takes charge and tells her to follow; Rowling's fourth-rank warrior training gives her more ability than most civilians, but the catastrophe still reduces survival to flight and leaves her later fate unstated.
