Nimitz is Kalan's Second Granduncle and a shrewd elder of the Debs clan. He reads social danger more clearly than his younger relatives and tries to preserve the family through both Alice's scandal and the smuggling trial. (Chapters 126–134)

The Sculpture, Revenge, And Fenlai'S Fall

Nimitz recognizes Merritt's predatory interest in Alice and worries that her return to the Debs household has occurred before the scandal and power imbalance can be safely managed. When the water-jade case brings the clan before judgment, he shifts to survival strategy, directing Kalan to suppress pride and show humility toward Linley Baruch. His advice cannot erase the family's crimes or losses, but it reflects an elder who understands that status must sometimes yield to the people and institutions capable of destroying it. Appearance and personality
