Biography

Investigation of the Debs clan

Clayde appoints Merritt to investigate the Debs clan's smuggling case, placing the long-serving Right Premier over a prosecution with major political consequences. Merritt presides over the public hearing with an upright bearing, follows the evidence against Bernard and Kanter, and uses royal confirmation to bring the clan's attempted concealment to an end. (Chapters 126–134)

Merritt later joins Clayde and Ransome at Linley's manor after the assassination attempt, motivated by concern and political duty. Linley closes the courtyard and reveals his revenge against Patterson; Merritt is killed in the violent confrontation, leaving Fenlai without the influence he had accumulated over decades. (Chapters 137–148)

Merritt has gleaming hair and holds his waist and back ramrod straight while presiding in court. (Chapter 133)
