Holmer

Holmer is a three-hundred-year-old apothecary hired by Madame Wade to remove Keane, Jenne, and Linley Baruch. His poisons devastate their escort, but his confidence in indirect killing leaves him helpless against Haeru. (Chapters 184–189, 193, 195)

Biography

The O'Brien Empire And New Companions

Madame Wade recruits Holmer to prevent Keane from claiming Cerre's governorship. He prepares poison capable of killing across the traveling party and turns an apparently safe camp into a mass casualty scene, expecting chemistry and surprise to finish the assignment without a prolonged fight. Linley and the core targets survive, however, and the Blackcloud Panther Haeru reaches Holmer before he can recover control. One blow kills the old assassin, after which Madame Wade strips wealth from the clan he leaves behind. (Chapters 184–189, 193, 195)

Appearance and personality

Holmer is an old, eccentric-looking man whose age and specialized reputation make others treat him as a dangerous “freak.” He is secretive, methodical, and confident in poison, but lacks an answer when exposed to direct magical-beast violence. (Chapters 184–189)

Abilities and cultivation

Holmer's defining ability is apothecary work: he creates and deploys extremely lethal poisons capable of wiping out numerous guards at once. The evidence does not establish a comparable direct-combat rank, and Haeru kills him immediately at close range. (Chapters 184–189)

Relationships

  • Madame Wade: She hires Holmer for the succession murders and later exploits his death by taking resources from his clan. (Chapters 184–195)
  • Keane and Jenne: They are Holmer's intended victims because their survival threatens Madame Wade's control of Cerre. (Chapters 184–189)
  • Linley Baruch: Linley's presence keeps the assassination from achieving its central aim. (Chapters 184–189)
