Cesar

Cesar is an ancient assassin and founding figure of the Saber organization whose career spans the fall of the Pouant Empire, his independent ascent to the Demigod level, and his later life as a Highgod in the Infernal Realm. His interventions repeatedly protect Linley Baruch and the surviving Armand brothers, while his attachment to Rosarie reveals responsibilities beneath his deliberately indolent manner. (Chapters 130–132, 205–208, 377, 541, 595)

Biography

The Necropolis, Deityhood, And Yulan Conflicts

Cesar first approaches Linley as an admirer of sculpture, requesting a portrait that captures the aura he bears while killing and offering a favor in exchange. His response to Linley’s request demonstrates that his violence is governed by calculations rather than indiscriminate impulse: he refuses to abduct a king because the resulting instability and conflict with the Radiant Church would cost more than the sculpture is worth. He nevertheless applies his specialized knowledge to identify poison as a method by which Linley might overcome a stronger warrior. (Chapters 130–132)

After independently breaking through to the Demigod level, Cesar uses his Godrealm to save Linley’s group from Stehle and rejects an invitation to join the Radiant Church. He initially sees no reason to protect the five captive brothers, but reverses himself when he recognizes them as descendants of his old friend Armand. Cesar threatens to attack the Sacred Isle if the Church pursues them, explains their Undying Warrior heritage, and later retrieves a hand-copied Secret Undying Manual so they can cultivate their lost clan art. His intervention changes the brothers from vulnerable captives into a restored Supreme Warrior lineage under Linley’s guidance. (Chapters 205–208)

As one of the Yulan continent’s newer Deities, Cesar joins the senior powers supervising the opening of the Necropolis of the Gods and shows concern when Beirut explains the danger facing Linley’s party. He later helps explain the relationship between divine clones and borrowed divine power, but does not pretend to possess equal standing with older Deities. Before entering the Necropolis himself, he admits that he is only an early-stage Demigod and the weakest of the four participating Deities. He accepts the danger partly because he misses life-and-death struggle, yet asks Linley to protect Rosarie and the Frost Goddess Shrine if he fails to return. (Chapters 333–377)

Cesar survives the Necropolis and returns with a divine artifact but no higher-level spark. The arrival of prisoners from Gebados keeps him in Yulan temporarily, although he openly plans to seek a more challenging life in the Higher Planes. In the Infernal Realm, Tarosse later supplies the divine sparks through which Cesar reaches the Highgod level. Cesar’s relationship with Cecily on Miluo Island leaves him uncharacteristically despondent and draws him into conflict with her husband, but his Yulan companions refuse to abandon him. He eventually leaves the island, moves to Meer City with Tarosse and Dylin, and regains much of his earlier irreverent humor. (Chapters 414, 422, 541–555, 583, 595)

Appearance and personality

Cesar generally appears as a middle-aged man despite being roughly six thousand years old when he meets Linley. He wears a long, loose robe, has facial hair that he strokes while talking, and frequently carries a lazy or indolent smile. That relaxed presentation can vanish instantly when he becomes serious, as it does when he recognizes the Armand brothers and confronts Stehle. (Chapters 130–131, 205–206, 333, 376)

He is playful, irreverent, fond of beautiful women and sculpture, and openly proud of his talent. He also follows a personal code: he protects Delia’s confidence, dislikes owing favors, weighs political consequences before accepting a killing, and honors his bond with Armand’s descendants. His longing for danger eventually drives him toward the Necropolis and Higher Planes, while his concern for Rosarie and later heartbreak over Cecily demonstrate attachments that complicate his cultivated image of carelessness. (Chapters 131–132, 205–208, 377, 422, 541–555)

Abilities and cultivation

Cesar was already a Saint during Doehring Cowart’s era and spent more than five thousand years at the peak of that level. As the King of Killers, he specializes in ambush, speed, and one-hit assassination rather than formal exchanges. His techniques are described as having reached an artistic pinnacle, and his speed in an earlier duel was sufficient to match Fain, the fastest disciple of the War God’s College. His knowledge also includes poisons and methods for killing physically superior targets. (Chapters 130–132, 249)

He becomes a Demigod through his own understanding rather than by fusing his first divine spark. His Godrealm can immobilize Saints over an area, allowing him to throw Stehle through multiple walls without resistance, but Cesar later identifies himself as only an early-stage Demigod and weaker than the older Yulan Deities. His affinity is darkness: he specifically seeks a God-level darkness spark, and his Necropolis expedition yields a divine artifact rather than the spark required for an immediate rank increase. (Chapters 205, 377, 414, 422)

In the Infernal Realm, Tarosse gives Cesar the successive divine sparks needed to reach the Highgod level. This is advancement by fusion rather than by independently mastering the relevant profound mysteries, and the narrative consequently treats the future potential of this group of spark-fused Highgods as limited. The corpus establishes Cesar’s rank but does not provide a comparably detailed later demonstration of his Highgod assassination techniques. (Chapters 541, 560)

Relationships

  • Linley Baruch: Cesar begins as an admirer commissioning a sculpture, then becomes a recurring protector and adviser. He saves Linley from Stehle, entrusts the Armand brothers to him, explains aspects of Deityhood, and asks him to safeguard Rosarie’s interests. Linley later stands beside Cesar against the Bagshaw clan and helps him leave Miluo Island. (Chapters 130–132, 205–208, 370, 377, 541–555)

  • Rosarie: Cesar and Rosarie have a “special” relationship whose exact label is left unstated. He understands her attachment to the Frost Goddess Shrine and fears she will resist O’Brien’s religious policy if he dies, so he arranges protection for her before entering the Necropolis. Rosarie in turn receives information from him about Linley and the Radiant Church. (Chapters 361, 368, 377)

  • Barker Armand, Ankh Armand, Hazer Armand, and Gates Armand: Their descent from Armand, Cesar’s closest old friend, transforms Cesar’s initial indifference into fierce protection. He prevents their capture, restores their clan identity and training manual, and places them under Linley’s guidance with an affection compared to that of an elder for his descendants. (Chapters 205–208)

  • Tarosse and Dylin: Cesar travels through the Infernal Realm with these fellow Yulan Deities. Tarosse’s divine sparks enable his rise to Highgod, and the three later share a residence and social circle in Meer City after leaving the restrictive Skyrite Mountains. (Chapters 541, 555, 583, 595–597)
