Nalan Yanran

Nalan Yanran is the Nalan clan heiress and Yun Yun's disciple whose public attempt to annul an arranged marriage creates the Three-Year Agreement with Xiao Yan. Defeat and the destruction of the Misty Cloud Sect later recast that rivalry, and her mature loyalty centers on helping Yun Yun rather than restoring the old conflict. The Fallen Genius and the Hidden Teacher

A talented thirteen-year-old disciple of Yun Yun, Nalan Yanran rejects a marriage arranged before birth to the disgraced Xiao Yan. She wants the power to choose her own life and believes her sect status places her on a path incompatible with the engagement, but she initially fails to understand the humiliation her public demand inflicts on Xiao Yan and Xiao Zhan. She comes to the Xiao clan without Nalan Jie's consent, offers Qi Gathering Powder as compensation, presses for annulment, and accepts Xiao Yan's three-year challenge after he repudiates the contract. Yun Yun's support enables her independence; Ge Ye negotiates for her; Xiao Yan experiences her method as an attack on his and his father's dignity. She cooperates rather than antagonizes Xiao Yan during the Heaven Eye encounters, brings news of Yun Yun, and helps connect Xiao Yan to the Flower Sect succession crisis. Xiao Yan treats the old annulment as youthful history; Nalan Yanran's primary loyalty is now to Yun Yun rather than to restoring Misty Cloud prestige.
