Isolde
Isolde is the Grand Mage Master who leads the Grand Mage Order's collaboration with the gods. He tries to conceal that allegiance from Alex Rogue, executes the apparent intruder when the deception fails, and becomes the last hostile Grand Mage standing before dying inside his own Master's Domain. (Chapters 338–345)
Biography
Betrayal at the Grand Mage meeting
Isolde presides over a gathering of fifty-three Grand Mages convened to discuss the approaching Chosen Games and the timing of their planned destruction. When Alex breaks through the meeting-room door and survives the Order's first attack, Isolde permits him to stand behind Arceus, then addresses the assembly as its most respected leader. Alex's questions expose the meeting's real alignment: Isolde repeatedly denies serving the gods and claims to prefer a peaceful merger of worlds, but Alex's truth-seeing ability marks those statements as lies. Once Alex reveals that he killed Varyn, Isolde abandons discussion, bisects him with Staff Blade, condemns Arceus as a traitor, and orders the entire Order to destroy them both. (Chapters 338–340)
Fall of the Grand Mage Master
The combined Grand Mage assault rebounds from Alex's defense and kills everyone except Isolde and the regenerating Arceus. Furious at his colleagues' recklessness but still intent on killing Alex and preserving the gods' plan, Isolde puts Arceus to sleep, restores himself with Ultimate Buff, and turns the duel into a close-range pursuit. He discovers the practical limit of Alex's death reversal, deliberately mutilates him to prevent a clean revival, and activates Master's Domain when Alex wounds him. Inside that lightless space, Isolde suppresses almost every skill and repeatedly attacks from concealment, but Alex learns that blood abilities still function. Blood Chains and two Universal Orbs immobilize Isolde; Alex crushes him, ending the hostile Order, while Arceus later inherits the vacant title. (Chapters 341–346)
Appearance and personality
Isolde is a man with striking green hair, a sharp beard, piercing green eyes, and elegant mage robes. He initially appears controlled and authoritative, silencing a chamber with a gesture and framing catastrophic plans as sober necessity, but his repeated lies reveal calculation rather than neutrality. Combat exposes pride, cruelty, and adaptability: he quickly analyzes Destiny Shift, tries to make Alex's injuries permanent, and mocks a trapped opponent, yet loses composure when his peers die and panics once his own domain no longer guarantees victory. A later Nightmare Echo is described with white eyes and feminine pronouns; because it is a constructed echo and conflicts with the original chapters, it is not treated as a change in Isolde's identity. (Chapters 338–344 and 428–430)
Skills and system abilities
As Grand Mage Master, Isolde is called the strongest mage in Universal Descent and combines high-level spellcasting with unexpectedly proficient close combat. He survives the reflected assault that kills the other hostile Grand Mages by raising Ultimate Barrier, then uses Ultimate Buff to heal his wounds, greatly increase his statistics, and transform his frail mage's body into a front-line fighter capable of seizing Alex and throwing him through multiple floors. Mental Sleep suppresses Arceus's consciousness, although determination can shorten its duration to minutes. (Chapters 341 and 345–346)
Staff Blade
Isolde channels mana into his Master Staff to form Staff Blade, a blue energy edge fast and precise enough to bisect Alex before he can react. He uses it throughout their duel to decapitate and dismember Alex, parry Blood Blades, and attack from darkness. The extracted skill description later confirms that a staff is required, making the technique equipment-dependent rather than an innate blade. Its damage and speed are exceptional, but it can be avoided at close margins, opposed by Alex's claws, and ultimately knocked from Isolde's grasp after he is restrained. (Chapters 340–345)
Master's Domain
Master's Domain is a Forbidden Skill activated when Isolde is severely wounded or in mortal danger. It creates a dark enclosed space, hides Isolde in the surrounding shadows, and prevents the target from casting spells or activating most skills while leaving physical statistics and limited senses intact. Isolde claims the domain persists until his victim dies; within it he cannot or does not use ordinary magic, instead emerging briefly to attack with Staff Blade. Pre-activated powers can remain available, and Alex discovers that his Blood Arts still operate, allowing him to force Isolde into view and bind him. Isolde's death breaks the domain. (Chapters 342–344)
Relationships
- Alex Rogue: Isolde first tolerates Alex as Arceus's unusual apprentice, then treats him as an existential enemy once Alex exposes the Order's alliance with the gods. Their duel ends with Isolde crushed inside Master's Domain. (Chapters 338–345)
- Arceus: Isolde resents Arceus for avoiding meetings and refusing the Order's plans. He marks him as a traitor and intends to torture him for information, but Isolde's death leaves Arceus as the only surviving Grand Mage and eventual successor to the office. (Chapters 338–346 and 457)
- Varyn: Isolde invokes the supposed consequences of a god's death while concealing his own allegiance. Alex's disclosure that he killed Varyn exposes the weakness of Isolde's argument and precipitates the battle. (Chapters 339–340)
Items
- Master Staff: Isolde's Artifact++ staff grants five million Spirit and serves as the required focus for Staff Blade. Alex rejects it as an extraction choice after Isolde's death. (Chapters 341–345)
- Grand Mage Master Core: Alex extracts this Artifact++ core from Isolde after killing him and later gives it to Arceus, enabling the succession to Isolde's office. (Chapters 345–346)
