Sergius
Sergius is a Hound centurion who takes command of Eryk’s field assignments after the trainee period. His missions reveal a ruthless approach to service, and later events tie him to Octavian’s faction and the deaths of loyal Hounds. (Chapters 213, 225–227, 243, 270, 320)
Biography
Commanding Eryk’s field work
Sergius first speaks with Eryk as he is assigned to the Western Hounds. He explains that Eryk will be under his command and that field work will involve decisions he may not agree with. He does not promise a comfortable posting; instead, he expects Eryk to carry out orders and keep his conscience from disrupting the assignment. (Chapter 213)
When Eryk begins serving as a Hound, Sergius gives him missions through a message book. His instructions include tracking a First Citizen who is fleeing with two legionnaires and killing her, then delivering her artifacts through a chain of command. Eryk’s doubts about the assignment expose the moral distance between Sergius’s approach and the person Eryk wants to be. (Chapters 225–232)
Betrayal and death
Sergius’s choices become part of the larger political crisis. He is present in the Imperial command structure, then becomes associated with Duke Octavian and the Western Hounds when the Emperor’s side fractures. This connects the Hounds’ internal loyalties to the conflict over who controls the Empire. (Chapters 243, 254, 270)
Later reports state that Sergius and his allies killed loyal Hounds, and that he himself was killed in the palace. The account places him among the losses of the coup rather than showing his final fight directly; Eryk’s time under his command leaves a record of the missions and moral compromises that led into this betrayal. (Chapters 318–320)
Appearance and personality
Sergius is pale and slouches when seated, unlike the rigidly upright Cornelius. He presents himself as a matter-of-fact commander, but his orders show little concern for the moral cost of the missions he assigns. (Chapters 225–227)
Magic and abilities
Sergius’s role is command of Hound operations, messaging, and field assignments. The story does not establish a personal spell form or a numeric combat ability for him. (Chapters 213, 225–232)
