Gilda

Gilda is a changeling and highly capable covert operative whose unassuming appearances conceal her skill as a poisoner, infiltrator, and killer. Her long service to Antonia shapes her loyalties, while her uneasy partnership with Konstantin becomes an important thread in the later conflicts. (Chapters 65, 270, 299–302, 318–330)

Biography

An agent hidden in plain sight

Gilda first appears as a cook whom Konstantin recognizes as an agent connected to the Praetorian Guard. Her ordinary appearance makes her easy to underestimate, but Konstantin’s warning that her presence precedes danger reveals how much she unsettles even experienced operatives. The exchange establishes her as a known part of the Empire’s covert networks before her later actions come into view. (Chapter 65)

Years later, Gilda is working in the kitchens while remaining a dangerous political actor. When Konstantin finds her in the palace, she has already killed two imperial necromancers and is seeking revenge after Antonia’s murder. She reveals that she was wounded while trying to report her success, and she helps Konstantin enter the palace to pursue his own objective. Their skills complement each other, although he remains wary of her changeling nature and methods. (Chapter 270)

A complicated bond with Konstantin

Gilda later joins Konstantin’s journey through Bartiradia, posing as his wife and travelling with two other refugees. She speaks the local language and helps them pass as a family. Konstantin dislikes having her close and distrusts her empathy and morality, but he also recognizes her commitment and accepts her assistance. When they reunite with Eryk’s group, Konstantin explains that Antonia’s father raised Gilda from infancy and that she served the family for decades. (Chapters 299–302)

Gilda continues to act as a protector and investigator. She kills Hounds who come after Konstantin, watches over the group, and later helps identify dangerous shapeshifters in the goliath city. Her work is not limited to combat: she observes, gathers information, and chooses when to remain unseen. Konstantin’s time with her grows more companionable, though he still jokes about her unsettling appetite and habits. (Chapters 318–330)

Choosing her own purpose

Gilda’s actions show a strong need for purpose and a lasting connection to the people who once directed her. She joins Konstantin’s palace mission because she wants to free a nephew from prison, and she accompanies him afterward despite his discomfort. In the goliath city, she continues hunting hidden threats even when the others would rather focus on their own expedition. (Chapters 270, 299–302, 327–330)

Her choices also separate loyalty from obedience. After Antonia’s murder, Gilda acts against the necromancers and pursues revenge, but later she remains with Konstantin for goals he chooses himself. She makes herself useful through investigation and protection, then continues that work because she values the purpose it gives her. (Chapters 270, 299–302, 327–330)

Appearance and personality

Gilda often appears as a portly older woman, but she can change into a younger, leaner form. She is observant, self-possessed, and capable of unsettling humor. Her seeming warmth can coexist with ruthless choices; she kills efficiently when she judges someone to be a threat. (Chapters 270, 302, 327)

Magic and abilities

As a changeling, Gilda can alter her appearance, including her age and body shape. She is a capable poisoner, moves with remarkable quiet, and can pass through guarded spaces using stealth and magic. In the palace, she avoids guards by drawing attention away and guides Konstantin through routes she knows. (Chapters 270, 327)

Gilda is also a skilled killer and investigator. She kills the two imperial necromancers who had captured and wounded her, kills two Hounds found in the goliath city, and identifies a doppelgänger and werecat there. Her effectiveness comes from planning and concealment as much as direct violence. (Chapters 270, 318, 327, 330)
