Damian
Damian is the mage who first explains magic to Eryk and charges the amulet that lets him communicate with the people of the Empire. He becomes Eryk’s early guide to aether and spell forms, giving the newcomer a practical foundation for learning in a world he does not understand. (Chapters 2–6)
Biography
Helping Eryk adapt
Damian first meets Eryk during his early days in the Legion, when he charges a translation amulet and helps Eryk begin communicating. Eryk is still learning the language and trying to understand the rules of his new life, so the amulet gives him a way to ask questions rather than remain dependent on gestures and guesswork. (Chapter 2)
Damian continues to teach Eryk during training. He explains that Eryk’s unusual affinity does not automatically make spellcasting easy, and he walks him through the principles behind aether, spell construction, and the dimensional pocket form. Their conversations help Eryk understand the difference between an affinity and the ability to shape and channel a spell. (Chapters 3–6)
Damian’s influence remains present after Eryk’s first lessons. Eryk later recalls the instructor’s explanations when he reads about spell forms and tests his own magical abilities. The local narrative does not show Damian’s later career or establish what happens to him after the initial training period. (Chapters 19, 24–25, 68)
Appearance and personality
Damian is a mage and instructor who spends time teaching recruits. Eryk remembers him as patient and willing to explain the fundamentals rather than dismiss questions from an inexperienced student. (Chapters 3–6)
