Makli Hyun-ah

Makli Hyun-ah is a male side-story protagonist in A Regressor’s Tale of Cultivation. Separated from Earth and adopted by the Makli Clan, he accepts a new identity without surrendering the memory of Jegal Mikhail or his search for Lee Seo-ah. He combines the Naming Dao Conferring Gods Canon with a Confucian Beast Taming method, turns a competitive talisman game into a cultivation language, establishes a mixed demon-beast polity, and later becomes Ban Ta’s disciple. Titles such as Darkness Queen do not indicate a gender change; the narrative consistently identifies Hyun-ah as a man.

Biography

Naming, talismans, and a new clan

Hyun-ah awakens far from Earth as the adopted son of Makli Cheon-sa. Accepting the Makli name gives him a place in an unfamiliar cultivation society, but he still carries Jegal Mikhail’s skull, grief over Hwang Ung’s attack, and the desire to find Lee Seo-ah. He chooses the Naming Dao Conferring Gods Canon because sealing phenomena into written names matches his improvisational instincts and offers a road that is his rather than one prescribed by ordinary Immortal cultivation. He turns practice into Talisman War, a competitive system where prepared names, restricted fields, and summoned representations let technique matter alongside raw strength. The game spreads through the clan and sharpens his control, while Makli Hweol becomes his steady friend and guide. Hyun-ah reaches explicit Qi Refining-equivalent stages and helps the Lianshan line survive the Shaman Family crisis, changing from displaced dependent into a cultivator responsible for the people who accepted him. Black tribulations accompany his progress through Qi Building and Core Formation equivalents. He learns that Naming methods offer less lifespan, regeneration, and bodily defense than the Immortal Family path, so clever talismans cannot substitute for preparation. Even so, his clan recognizes him as an elder. Revenge remains immediate, but it no longer stands alone: keeping the Lianshan people alive and improving a system others can learn become part of what strength means to him. (Chapters 818–822)

Black King and the demon-beast nation

Core Formation-equivalent strength is not enough to defeat Hwang Ung, and Hyun-ah’s Confucian method advances through public recognition rather than solitary breathing. He cultivates Pacifying Myriad Demons Under the Heavens Survey by gathering the acknowledgment of demon beasts and concentrates its mysteries in an accepted authority-holder. Building social authority becomes cultivation, forcing him to govern rather than merely declare himself powerful. (Chapters 822–825)

Hyun-ah establishes rule among the western-sea demon beasts and founds a nation in which humans and beasts can coexist. The polity gives his Beast Taming art range and depth while imposing obligations to subjects who recognize him. His titles Black King and Darkness Queen emerge from that political role, not from a change in sex. With Makli Hweol advising him and the clan backing the experiment, revenge broadens into the responsibility of keeping a mixed society functional. (Chapters 823–828)

The nation carries him through Nascent Soul- and Heavenly Being-equivalent power. He defeats Hwang Ung, follows the resulting clues toward an older mystery, and eventually ascends after reaching Grand Perfection Heavenly Being-equivalent strength. The victory does not simply return him to Earth or reunite the old group. It opens the Purple Gold Realm and reveals that his companions are scattered across an Upper Realm whose institutions can claim him as readily as the Makli Clan once sheltered him. Ban Ta’s disciple and Ascending Metamorphosis

In the Purple Gold Realm, Sacred Master Ban Ta takes Hyun-ah as a disciple. The arrangement provides knowledge and protection but also threatens his autonomy through relentless, possessive instruction. Ahn Geum becomes partner, rescuer, and counterweight, choosing him even when institutions treat his advancement as something they may direct. Hyun-ah studies the next structural change while resisting any method that would turn mentorship into the loss of his own judgment. (Chapters 831–835)

He experiments with Self-Expulsion and leaves the Purple Gold Realm to face Black Rain. The tribulation attacks the anomaly of his own Confucian method, forcing him to negate and rewrite the self that carries it. Surviving changes his existence into a lower-dimensional written form and establishes Ascending Metamorphosis First Tribulation, later described as early Four-Axis-equivalent. Naming and Confucian authority both persist through the transformation rather than one being discarded for ordinary Immortal cultivation. (Chapters 835–836)

The breakthrough changes his understanding of canon. Pacifying Myriad Demons is not only violent suppression; it can convey will through an accepted social and written structure. That interpretation explains why nation-building was cultivation and why Self-Expulsion can seal Hyun-ah himself as a kind of text. It also deepens the danger: the more his person becomes a conveyable canon, the more carefully he must protect consent, identity, and the relationships giving the authority meaning. Puppets and the path onward

The Vast Cold Realm’s Human Race is losing to ancient puppets when Hyun-ah arrives. His main Confucian suppression works poorly against machinery because mechanical enemies do not supply the social and demon-beast recognition on which Pacifying Myriad Demons depends. He therefore combines methods, reading the Overseer Factory through Naming principles and turning enemy names, authorities, and puppet structures into talisman-like tools. The weakness of one path becomes the problem the other is designed to solve. (Chapters 837–842)

Hyun-ah survives confinement and bodily displacement into a Buddhist form, assists Jo Yeon, Ha-eun, Ban Ta, and Ahn Geum, and helps retake the factory. His lower personal realm does not become Star Shattering cultivation merely because he commands puppets at that scale. The machines supply external weight and compensate for his poor compatibility against mechanics, while his actual person remains at the First Tribulation state established by Black Rain. The conflict ends without a simple homecoming. Revived powers, Lee Seo-ah’s attempts to rescue him from what she interprets as captivity, and Ban Ta’s resistance to a repeating fate pull the group into further movement. Hyun-ah retains Naming, Confucian suppression, Talisman War logic, and external puppet control as he begins an interdimensional pursuit. His latest development is integration of different methods around protection, not a new formally named personal stage after First Tribulation. (Chapters 843–847)

Appearance and personality

Makli Hyun-ah is a man and is repeatedly addressed with he and him pronouns. Black King and Darkness Queen are titles attached to his polity and reputation, not evidence of a female identity or transformation. At Ascending Metamorphosis, his existence can become a lower-dimensional written form, and later bodily displacement places him in a Buddhist body; neither state changes the continuing male person using the name Hyun-ah. He is irreverent, competitive, inventive, stubborn about autonomy, and easily absorbed in the rules of Talisman War. Those traits coexist with the willingness to accept clan responsibility, found a nation, undergo a dangerous tribulation outside a protected realm, and stop destruction that threatens strangers. Hyun-ah resists mentors and rescuers who define his interests for him, yet repeatedly chooses partnership when Ahn Geum, Makli Hweol, Ban Ta, and new allies treat him as someone whose decisions matter. Abilities and cultivation

Naming Dao Conferring Gods Canon

The Naming Dao Conferring Gods Canon weakens the distinction between an empty name and the substantial phenomenon it signifies. Hyun-ah writes and mentally chants names, seals a target’s power or essence into paper, and later summons or extracts stored authorities. Early applications require known names or prepared formulas, while mature use lets him interpret the Overseer Factory itself as a structure of names and coordinate named summons within another method’s suppression field. (Chapters 816–824, 837–847)

Naming cultivation provides less lifespan, regeneration, and physical protection than standard Immortal methods. Early talismans may vanish after only a few attacks, and invoking the name of an unrelated True Immortal can kill the user. Talisman War’s restrictions also do not reproduce unrestricted combat. The method’s latest strength is compatibility: its summons and analysis compensate for the Confucian path’s weakness against machinery without pretending the external puppets are Hyun-ah’s own cultivation realm. Pacifying Myriad Demons Under the Heavens Survey

Pacifying Myriad Demons is a Confucian Beast Taming canon cultivated through recognition and public authority. Subjects and demon beasts acknowledge a ruler, concentrating mysteries in that office; Hyun-ah can then suppress Heaven and Earth spiritual energy and chaotic powers, tame demon beasts, and support wide-area formations. Founding a nation is therefore a cultivation act as well as politics, and increasing responsibility carries him through several explicitly equivalent formal realms. (Chapters 822–831)

The method needs a community or beasts that genuinely recognize the authority-holder. It performs poorly against purely mechanical puppets, and Black Rain tests whether the user can negate the anomalous self created by the canon. At First Tribulation, Hyun-ah can expel and seal himself into a lower-dimensional written form. Puppet control later offsets the mechanical weakness, while the underlying suppression remains strongest where social, spiritual, or demon-beast relations give it something to govern. Talisman War and combined methods

Talisman War is both game and technical language. Hyun-ah defines competitive rules around named talismans, restricted fields, and summoned representations, letting weaker clan members test planning and control rather than only raw output. The tournaments spread his Naming system socially and train rapid adaptation. Later wars reuse the same logic at greater stakes: enemy authorities become pieces that can be named, constrained, redirected, and combined with Confucian suppression. (Chapters 818–824, 837–847)

Its rules cannot force an unrestricted enemy to cooperate, and a tournament victory does not establish superiority outside the agreed field. The mature application succeeds because Hyun-ah combines it with polity authority, Self-Expulsion, allies, and captured puppet systems. His latest combat state includes access to Star Shattering-class machines, but their output remains equipment under control rather than a personal promotion beyond Ascending Metamorphosis First Tribulation. Relationships

• Makli Hweol: Friend, clan guide, and political adviser. Makli Hweol helps Hyun-ah understand the new society and remains beside him through the transition from cultivation game to kingship.
• Makli Cheon-sa: Adoptive father and protector. Receiving the Makli identity gives Hyun-ah a family without erasing the Earth relationships he still seeks.
• Ahn Geum: Partner, rescuer, and counterweight to institutional control. She repeatedly chooses Hyun-ah and helps preserve his autonomy through the Purple Gold and Vast Cold conflicts.
• Ban Ta: Possessive master and powerful protector. Ban Ta’s teaching enables the First Tribulation path but also forces Hyun-ah to defend the difference between guidance and captivity.
• Lee Seo-ah: Missing companion who later tries to rescue him. Their pursuit is complicated by her belief that his master-disciple arrangement has stolen his freedom.
