Doctor Mo, whose name is Mo Juren, is the physician who takes Han Li and Zhang Tie into God Hand Valley after they fail the Seven Mysteries Sect's entrance trial. His healing skill, medical library, and instruction give Han Li the foundation for a lifetime of medicine and cultivation, but that apprenticeship is built around Mo Juren's concealed need for a body with spiritual roots.

As both mentor and first principal antagonist, Doctor Mo establishes the pattern of dangerous bargains that shapes Han Li's caution. He is a respected healer capable of genuine instruction and long-term provision, yet he treats disciples, allies, and even his own family as pieces in survival plans. His failed attempt to seize Han Li's body ends his life, while his poisons, will, and family arrangements continue directing Han Li's choices after his death. (Chapters 5–65, 100–124)

Biography

The Ghost Hand's ruin and bargain

Before entering the Seven Mysteries Sect, Mo Juren was known in Lan Province as the Ghost Hand, a formidable martial figure who had built his own power in Jiang Hu. A trusted aide's poison forced him to abandon both his position and family while he searched for a cure. When the wounded Yu Zhitong possessed a rare spiritual herb, Mo Juren tried negotiation and then poisoned him, taking the cultivator's medicines and possessions after destroying his body. (Chapters 30, 58)

That apparent victory instead bound the two men together. Yu Zhitong's departing curse accelerated Mo Juren's aging, while Yu's disembodied soul entered his body and faced eventual assimilation. Mo Juren had no spiritual roots and could not cultivate magic on his own, so he accepted Yu Zhitong's proposal: find a spiritually rooted Eternal Spring Arts practitioner, temporarily gain enough magic to possess that body, and afterward find Yu a replacement vessel. Their cooperation rested on mutual dependence, fear, and plans to exploit one another. (Chapters 56, 58–60)

Apprenticeship in God Hand Valley

At the Seven Mysteries Sect, Doctor Mo's reputation comes from saving Sect Leader Wang and treating numerous disciples, not from formal membership in one of the sect's divisions. He chooses Han Li and Zhang Tie as herb-gathering and alchemy apprentices, teaches them plant identification, medicine refinement, anatomy, and healing, and tests both with the nameless chant later identified as the Eternal Spring Arts. Han Li's ability to produce its distinctive energy turns an initially plausible apprenticeship into the answer to Doctor Mo's failing lifespan. (Chapters 5–9, 30)

Doctor Mo supports Han Li with valuable herbs, medicinal baths, a private cultivation chamber, books, silver for his family, and years of medical training, but his urgency increasingly exposes the possessive purpose behind that care. He separately puts Zhang Tie through the Way of the Armored Elephant, then arranges the boy's disappearance and combines Yu Zhitong's corpse-refining method with Zhang Tie's tempered body to create the obedient Iron Slave later called Crooked Soul. The revelation recasts Doctor Mo's attention to both disciples as preparation for two different forms of control. (Chapters 9, 13–15, 28, 63–65)

Coercion, possession, and a posthumous bargain

After returning to God Hand Valley in a severely aged condition, Doctor Mo admits that he has little time left and demands that Han Li reach the fourth layer of the Eternal Spring Arts within a year. He enforces the deadline with the Insect Corpse Pill and an implied threat against Han Li's family. Han Li responds by hiding his true cultivation, studying martial arts, making poisons, and preparing counters. Their final clash demonstrates Doctor Mo's superior mortal combat experience, but Han Li wounds him with Aromatic Coiling Silk before the Iron Slave captures the disciple alive. (Chapters 28–32, 45–51)

Doctor Mo then sacrifices his own fundamental essence through the Seven Ghost Soul Devouring Technique, uses a Soul-Lock Talisman to immobilize Han Li, and begins the possession ritual Yu Zhitong taught him. He believes Han Li is at the fourth layer, but Han Li has secretly reached the sixth; the stronger soul devours Doctor Mo's invading soul instead. Doctor Mo dies without gaining the body or immortal path he sought, and Yu Zhitong's attempt to exploit the same opening also fails. (Chapters 52–60)

Death does not end Doctor Mo's leverage. His will reveals that the antidote he gave Han Li carried another poison curable only with the Mo family's Precious Warm Yang Jade. In return for protection of his wives and daughters, Doctor Mo offers wealth, a marriage arrangement, identities, information about allies and enemies, and control methods for the Iron Slave. Han Li ultimately goes to Jia Yuan City, negotiates with Lady Yan, protects the threatened estate, and returns Doctor Mo's remaining medical writings to his daughter, allowing the doctor's responsibilities and schemes to outlive him. (Chapters 62–64, 100–124)

Appearance and personality

When Han Li first meets him, Doctor Mo appears to be a tall, thin man of about sixty with yellowish skin, white hair, a chronic cough, and a hoarse voice. His true age at the later confrontation is only thirty-seven: the curse consuming his vitality makes him look decades older. The Seven Ghost Soul Devouring ritual temporarily restores his original appearance—a handsome, charismatic man in his prime—before the failed possession leaves his corpse more withered than before. (Chapters 5, 28–30, 52–57)

Doctor Mo is reserved and expressionless in his public role, and his medical accomplishments earn respect even from senior sect disciples. In private he is patient, observant, controlling, and ruthless, willing to poison Yu Zhitong, sacrifice Zhang Tie, and threaten Han Li's family to preserve his own life. He nevertheless plans extensively for his wives and daughters, showing that his family attachment is real even though he expresses it through coercive contingencies rather than trust. (Chapters 5–6, 29–32, 55–64, 100–118)

Abilities and cultivation

Doctor Mo is an exceptional mortal physician and martial artist, but he is explicitly unable to cultivate the Eternal Spring Arts because he lacks spiritual roots. His supernatural actions near his death depend on techniques and temporary magic supplied through Yu Zhitong's knowledge; they do not represent a permanent cultivation realm or a stable advance along the immortal path. (Chapters 56, 59, 65)

Medicine, alchemy, and poison

His medical practice combines diagnosis, herbal cultivation, medicine refinement, acupuncture, wound treatment, and poison craft. He saves the Seven Mysteries Sect's leader from an otherwise fatal injury, maintains a valley of medicinal plants, and leaves Han Li with enough training and manuscripts to become recognized as a highly capable physician. His preparations include the Insect Corpse Pill, complex antidotes, concealed toxins, and the Aromatic Coiling Silk formula that Han Li later turns against him. (Chapters 5–6, 9–11, 20–23, 31, 50, 62, 65–70)

Doctor Mo's expertise also has practical limits. He can recognize Aromatic Coiling Silk and understand its danger, but Han Li's customized preparation makes the antidote unique to its maker. Moreover, medical knowledge cannot undo Yu Zhitong's curse or grant spiritual roots. These failures drive his reliance on coercion and possession: the more thoroughly ordinary treatment fails him, the more he treats another person's cultivated body as his only remedy. Mortal martial arts

Doctor Mo retains formidable speed, internal force, pressure-point skill, and combat judgment despite his ruined body. He can cross a room before Han Li can react, seal acupoints, strike with concussive force, and adapt to concealment and ambush. His signature Demonic Silver Hands enlarge and harden his hands until a sharpened sword cannot cut them; he can catch a blade directly and break it with a finger. His need to capture Han Li unharmed, however, repeatedly restricts how much force he is willing to use. (Chapters 29, 45–48)

Seven Ghost Soul Devouring and possession

The Seven Ghost Soul Devouring Technique is a self-mutilating ritual learned from Yu Zhitong. Doctor Mo drives seven sinister blades into his body, feeds the carved ghost heads with his blood, and sacrifices fundamental essence to suppress the curse and temporarily recover youthful vitality and enough magic power for simple spells. The transformation is costly and temporary; Yu Zhitong explicitly warns that Doctor Mo's soul will be unable to keep casting once that essence is exhausted. (Chapters 52–56)

With this borrowed power, Doctor Mo activates a Soul-Lock Talisman, a ritual diagram, jade pieces, and an incantation intended to send his soul into Han Li's body. Possession is constrained by the relative strength of the two souls. Because Doctor Mo plans around a false fourth-layer estimate while Han Li is actually at the sixth layer of the Eternal Spring Arts, the invasion reverses and Doctor Mo is devoured. The technique therefore grants access to a single desperate attempt, not reliable mastery of cultivation. (Chapters 54–59)

Corpse refinement and command

Doctor Mo combines the Way of the Armored Elephant with a corpse-refining method supplied by Yu Zhitong to turn Zhang Tie's soulless body into the Iron Slave. The result is a huge, durable servant capable of overpowering Han Li and obeying direct commands, but it remains a mortal-world creation rather than a high-grade cultivator corpse. A Soul Guiding Bell and blood-recognition procedure transfer control after Doctor Mo's death, allowing Han Li to inherit the body that he names Crooked Soul. (Chapters 51, 54–55, 63–64)

Relationships

  • Han Li: Doctor Mo is Han Li's first master in medicine and cultivation, but also his intended possession vessel. His instruction gives Han Li durable skills; his betrayal teaches Han Li to distrust apparently generous masters, an influence Han Li still remembers much later. (Chapters 5–65, 3353)
  • Zhang Tie: Doctor Mo accepts Zhang Tie alongside Han Li, assigns him the brutal Way of the Armored Elephant, then secretly kills him and uses his prepared body for corpse refinement. Zhang Tie's friendship with Han Li makes this one of the most personal consequences of Doctor Mo's scheme. (Chapters 5–15, 63–64)
  • Crooked Soul: Under the name Iron Slave, the refined corpse is Doctor Mo's hidden enforcer and guard. Doctor Mo values it as the only successful product of his attempt to create a force of obedient corpse puppets. (Chapters 28, 51, 54–55, 63–64)
  • Yu Zhitong: Doctor Mo poisons and destroys Yu Zhitong's body, after which Yu's soul and curse become lodged within him.
