Catherine’s Staff

Catherine’s staff is a length of yew and dead yew that serves as both a walking aid and a focus for her power. She carries it through the later campaigns and into the final chapter. (Chapters 299, 478)

History

A staff carried through the campaigns

Catherine's staff is recorded as a staff of yew and later as deadwood or dead yew. She leans on it while walking, keeps it at her side in rest, and uses it to strike or channel her power. Its familiar presence continues through the war against the Dead King. (Chapters 305, 325–326, 350, 369, 395–396, 412, 430, 437, 443–444, 454–456, 460)

Carried into the future

After the Battle of Keter, Catherine carries a staff of dead yew as she stands before her soldiers. No later transfer or destruction is known. (Chapter 478)

Abilities and properties

The staff serves as a conduit for Catherine's Night and other Name-driven effects: she strikes a fortified wall with it, traces a circle that gathers Night, and uses it to shape black flame. It also functions as a support for her limp. No independent enchantment or power separate from Catherine's use is known. (Chapters 430, 443, 454, 475)
